Marshall's Story

High School: I came to Ferris as a junior, having spent freshman & sophomore years at Gonzaga Prep; GPrep and it had its ups and downs, the highlights include winning two championships with our soccer team as well as playing drums for theatre productions at Prep and GU and meeting some great gals and some cool people, very few of which I'm still in contact with. Later I met a cute, cool cheerleader from Ferris and she talked up Ferris, so I decided to give it a shot. I remember the parties, the gals, having fun with friends, not having to choose between cliques (playing football with the "jocks", listening to heavy metal and drinking with the "stoners", flirting with the cheerleaders, talking shop with the "smart kids", hanging out with the "band geeks" during rehearsals and then playing soccer with the "regular sports" outcasts and foreigners). Don't remember having any fantastic teachers, nor horrible ones. The last two years of high school were a pretty fun blur. Lots of practices (football, soccer, band (in school and rock bands outside of school)), trying to find the homework that I failed to do the previous night, meetings with Spokane Inter-High School Senate, flirting with some gals, hanging out with friends, waiting for the weekend, lots fun parties, doing crazy stuff, focusing on good grades, playing in rock bands, trying to make it safely home before curfew. Not in contact with hardly anyone from that time other than my good friend and soccer buddy Tony Courtwright and a friend and old gfriend Shaani. Oh, saw Heather awhile back. College: Pleged the Beta house because they were only people that I met that were "cool" - nerdy people have their place and value (U.W. was full of people with deve...Expand for more
loped brains and underdeveloped social skills), but not much fun in college. Partied, partied, partied, then tried to occasionally attend class (SO glad we could buy notes). And I can justify skipping class bc so many profs need to head to teacher's school to learn how to engage their students and vary their teaching methods. Got in a band again (the Dubs) played with them for a couple of years then formed a different one (the Subdudes), trying to take it further than the college scene. Choosing Political Science as a major allowed to take so many different classes (French, music, philosophy, political science, sociology, etc.) allowing me to become a well-rounded adult and not just someone with a degree. The frat thing was a blast and I still have some good friends from that era, but I'm not so in-line with their ideals. Not so pumped on the gals I met during that time as most of them were just seeking their MRS. degree. Tough living when Reagan was president - such conformity and selfishness ("future's so bright... I gotta wear shades"). Amazed that we got out of the 80's without blowing up the entire world, us included. Pretty campus, U.W. - always bring vistors by to see it. College Part II: I moved back to Spokane to get my Teaching Certificate, basically a Master's in Teaching because I already had an undergrad degree from UW (Political Science). I choose to study at EWU because their Teaching Program had a great reputation (deserved) and I could be close to my family and back in my hometown. I just got back from a year in Germany and a decade in Mexico. I don't have premium membership here, so if you signed my guestbook, that's cool, but I can't access it. Send me an email instead (or both).
