Martha's Story
Kenneth Cassel and I married in August 1968, after I graduated from Dorman. He had enlisted in the Marine Corp earlier that year. After 2 1/2 weeks,Kenneth was sent to Camp Pendleton, then to Vietnam.I had just entered nurses' training at USC-S.
While engaged in battle 10-31-68,the love of my life was killed. It took 3 days for the news to be delivered to Roebuck,SC.Looking back, I recall how restless I was during those 3 days.Although I had not yet received the devastating news,my intuition made me extremely restless and fearful.I went to my parents' home for the weekend to bake cookies to send to Vietnam;hoping that staying busy would calm my uneasiness. On Sunday evening the doorbell rang and my
world, as I had known it, turned upside down.
With the support of my wonderful family and outstanding friends(way too many to list here),I finished nurses' training and became a registered nurse.Praying had initially become very difficult for me.One day I told Preacher Tilman Lake, that I had prayed daily for Kenneth's safe return and now that he was gone,I no longer kne...Expand for more
w how to pray. This very wise and kind man of God,took my hand and said "Pray for a stronger back to bear what you must."I took the preacher's advice and God lifted me up and helped me through many difficult times.
God has truly blessed me! I later remarried and have a wonderful daughter and son! Although, I am divorced from their dad, we have always remained great friends.Another blessed event was the birth of my grandson in 1994! I love being Nana!
I continue to enjoy my life as a mother,a grandmother, and a nurse.
If I have learned anything in the past 40 years, it is that time does not heal all wounds.God's mercy makes the wounds bearable, and His grace fills the voids left in our lives.Everything that happens in life has a purpose. In high school,I looked at the world through rose colored glasses. Now, I look at the world for what it holds;the good and the bad.I look to God for strength to follow the path He has chosen for me.When He calls me home,if only one person can say that I have made a positive difference in his or her life, then I have been a success!
