Martha's Story
-Life
Well, here goes ! ! After graduation in '66, I attended MSAC for a couple of years, continued to work for my dad, and met my husband, Mel, thru his cousin, Cheryl Whitmore (Yamamoto) also a '66 EMHS grad. He was in the US Navy and stationed in Long Beach. Yes, it was the uniform.
We were married Oct 11, 1969. Our son, Steven, was born in 1972. He is married, has 3 children, born in '93, '95, '98. Their daughter ('95) now has 2 children, '15, '17. Yes, we are great-grandparents.
Our daughter, Carrie, was born in 1978 has 3 boys, born in '96, '99, '03. She and Shawn were married July 9, 2008. Shawn has 2 daughters, 1 living in Michigan and 1 in CA. So we really have 8 grandchildren....5 boys and 3 girls, aged, 16-26yo.
Mel and I were self-employed for many years. We owned a small manufacturing business making hand-tools and connectors for air compressors. We ended this in 1997. Mel went to work as a machinist for another company and I went to work for Sears Credit which became Citicards in 2003. Our credit unit was closed in 2005. I retired to stay home and care for my mom who lived with us. Mel retired in January 2006. We sold our home in Hesperia, CA and moved to Ontario, Oregon. My younger sister, Mary, has lived in the area for 40+ yrs. It's wonderful to be near her again.
Now another turn in our lives. My mom passed away in October 07. We decided to move ...Expand for more
back to SoCal. We were sad to leave my sis and her family.
We moved back to SoCal May '08. We are very happy as we were able to buy a large home in Victorville. Carrie and Shawn lived with us. Yes, we are an odd couple who enjoys having our children n grandchildren close. We didn't enjoy the empty nest much at all when in Oregon. Holidays are the pits away from our kids and grandkids. Although, we are considering one more move.
Mel is still retired but does enjoy security guard work. Our beautiful Golden retriever/yellow lab,
Since Feb '09, I worked for The Nutro Company (Mars) here in Victorville. They manufactured all natural dry dog and cat food. I was a Quality Technician Lab Operator. It was different for me but I enjoyed it and the people I worked with.
Feb 2015 our Carrie and family moved to Silver Lakes, Helendale, CA. They live on the lake. We followed and bought a home a mile from her in May '15. Had to downsize from our huge home.
My retirement finally came 1/4/16. Not going to work is weird.
Seven weeks into it, I fell from a ladder in the garage. First ride in an ambulance and visit to ER. 6m0 later had ACL replacement knee surgery. Now its 3/27/2019 and (except for a couple more falls in '18, all is well.
I do hope to reconnect with classmates. Unfortunately, the knee kept me from attending our 50th reunion.
