Marti's Story
I went to Memphis State from '88 until '92 then quit due to an injury. I got so caught up with work that I took a 7 year hiatus from school. I went to State Tech for a couple of years but got married and moved to England (my husband is British) before I finished my degree.
I met my husband; Dan, in an old fashioned chat room in 1998. We communicated for about two years before we met face-to-face. I finally decided he wasn't the axe murderer my mom thought he might be and flew to England to meet him in Dec. of 2000. We hit it off immediately. We had planned to spend the holiday season with his mother in Reepham, UK. I had spoken with her on several occasions via telephone but sadly never had the opportunity to meet her face-to-face. She passed away the day after I arrived in England. This was a terrible time for Dan and actually drew us close to one another. We really got the opportunity to see the kind of person the other one was due to this tragic event.
I returned home after visiting for a month (Jan. 2001). Dan told me later that he wanted to ask me to stay but was concerned as my mother threatened him bodily harm if I didn't return home. He said she ...Expand for more
reminded him that I had 3 uncles: 2 trained by the military (one being a sniper instructor) and 1 with a passion for hunting large game. HA! To be honest, I would have stayed had he asked. Even my boss said he didn't look for me to return.
Dan flew over a couple of months after that (May) to visit for 2 weeks. We became engaged during this visit and later married in October in Jackson, TN. It has been a whirlwind romance that has lasted (soon to be) 7 years.
We lived in Milton Keynes, UK for almost 2 years before he immigrated and brought me back home. We have no children but we do have a four-legged baby; a Maltese named Henri Hoover.
I finally finished my degree at the University of Memphis in Dec. of 2007 and a I am currently working towards my second Bachelor's degree; Interdisciplinary studies in psychology and communications. I am also attending Southwest Tennessee Community College in hopes of earning a business degree with a concentration in human resource management. I hope to complete both degrees next year.
We are also in the process of building a house in the Houston Levee and Macon Road area. It will be completed before the end of the year.
