Martica's Story

I will be 60 years old on October 8th and I am still standing. During my high school years I attended Cathedral HS and St Joseph HS in Denver, Colorado and completed junior and senior year and graduated in 1972 from Hillsdale HS in San Mateo, California. I am fortunate I get to re-connect with people from all three high schools as I had friends at all three schools. I attended San Francisco State University and obtained a BA and a Masters in Social Work degrees and passed the oral and written exams and became certified as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I worked for the State of California for 20 years in different positions and in various departments located at Sacramento, California. These jobs provided me the opportunity to travel throughout the state of California. I married three times but never gave birth to any children. I am now a pet parent to two Labrador/Border Collie mix dogs. Thanks to CalPers, I am now comfortably retired and working a part-time job in an administrative support position in a modern office building located within a few minutes of my residence. I live in a small community with a private park with a pool/spa to enjoy and a homeowners association and Board to keep me challenged and involved. The community is located within the neighborhood called Natomas near the Sacramento River and Discovery Park in close proximity to downtown and Old Town Sacramento. There are all types of stores, restaurants, church, parks, community center, library, post office, banks, dog parks, and trails all in the neighborhood so I never drive more than a few minutes each outing and get to walk most places. Although, there are plenty of stores in the area, I have learned to do my shopping online...Amazon, QVC and HSN...so I manage to stay out of malls. I was an avid hiker in the Sierra Nevada mountains and at the Pacific Coast trails for a decade and have great photos and memories of stunning places where I had lunch on Saturdays. I climbed actual stairs for exercise and know most of the interior staircases of the tallest buildings in Sacramento. Now on week-ends, I tend my garden and the dog's yard and take walks with the dogs or solo and thanks to the availability of the internet, I stay in contact with relatives and friends through e-mails and Facebook, and I confess, I do play games. I am told the games are good for the maintenance of brain activity. I am on Facebook as Marta Valero, do look me up and send me a message and a request to be friends. I read AARP Magazine and AARP Bulletin. The only travel I do is to Miami, Florida to visit paternal and maternal relatives and have the opportunity to be involved in Cubanismo and eat Cuban foo...Expand for more
d and pastries, drink cafecitos, café con leche, and the best mojitos, read Spanish-language newspaper (El Heraldo), listen to music by Pitbull, speak Spanish 24/7 and be involved in Cuban-Family dramas. I also make sure to go to the beach and actually swim in the ocean but the most amazing part is, I drive in Miami where the traffic is always congested and the drivers are insane. As time goes by, it has allowed me to do more research and exploration of my life-changing experience as a member of one of the largest migration of unaccompanied minors in the western hemisphere during the past century, Operation Pedro Pan. I am a Pedro Paner, a member of a group of individuals who are the most courageous, strongest, successful group of 14,000 children who left Cuba between 1960-1962. We are heroic people of valor with tenacity and spirit. There are several books published about these individuals and almost all these books have been written by Pedro Paners. My lawful arrival in the USA was on the 24th of April 1962. Although, I am an immigrant, I am also a lawful United States citizen; Yes, I vote in local & general elections; Yes, I own real property & pay county property taxes & homeowner's insurance policy premiums; Yes, I file income tax returns and pay federal and state taxes; Yes, I own a car with current registration paid to DMV & auto insurance policy premiums; and, Yes, I have a valid CA drivers license. Now to continue to shatter more stereotypes about immigrants, I have never been arrested; I have never been convicted of any crimes; and, I have never been the recipient of welfare. Yes, I have a valid social security card and I have contributed to the social security system and I look towards applying for my monthly retirement benefit check and Medicare in the next couple of years. In the time since my graduation from high school, 1972 to 2013, these years have been filled with triumphs and joy and losses and grief, easy times and tough times, and trials and tribulations. I have made, good decisions and reaped the rewards and benefits and I have made horrific decisions with devastating consequences and created complications to resolve but through it all it has been quite a journey. As I now take the steps towards the last stages of my life, I am appreciative for all the learning, experiences, and adventures and for all the people I have met along the way and most of all those who stayed awhile in my life and shared times and their lives with me in friendship and in love...I thank you. If you want to get to know me as the person I have become and share some times with me, please, do contact me. With loving kindness.......Martica
