Martin's Story

I dropped out (Bates) of school in '53, after facing (Mr Butler) suspension for the 3rd time, I realized Bates was not for me any longer. I went to Buffalo, NY and moved in with my Uncle Sonny, my Mother's Brother. I retuned home after Xmas, convinced my Mom to sign a paper that made it possible for me to Enlist in the US Army on Feb 27, 1954. I completed 16 weeks of Infantry Basic Trng and graduation from Airborne School in Sep '54 as a paratrooper and, joined the 82nd Airborne Div in Ft Bragg, NC. During my military career my overseas asignments were Germany, Japan, Panama, The Mid-east, Korea and 2 tours in Viet Nam. I married and Divorced three times, bought and sold 3 homes, sired 5 children of which 3 are alive today. Upon retirement from the army in 1976 I was hired by NBC, Kansas City, MO, as Chief News Cameraman. In Sept 1984 I resigned and started my own business, Marty ...Expand for more
Blackmore Productions. I am convinced, that one of the early, 'best' decisions I made was leaving home, joining the Army and facing challenges that helped me realize my true potential. As I reflect on how Bates was failing to observe and tap into my creative energy, which caused me to become restless, which lead to axactly what happened. Suspend me from school 'again', because 'they' did not understand me nor were any faculty members willing 'try'. I honestly believe that, if I had not wanted to enlist into the Army and my Dear Sweet Mother chose not to put her signature on that document, I would not be alive today. US prisons are fully of young Black Men like I used to be, who have energy that is sadly misunderstood by the adults in thier lives, the result, they wander and get into trouble at a too often young age, the law enters their lives and some of them never recover.
