Martin's Story
Dear Friends,
Unfortunately, I cannot be in Hibbing at this Reunion, but hope I shall be able make it for the next one in five years ?).
After 7½ years at Aarhus University, an MA in English and a BA in French, I, at 29, was surprised to be conscripted for a year in our Royal Danish Airforce. However, it gave me a lot of good memories and friendships, but was actually useless.
Having taught secondary school English, French, Italian, and German for 33 years in the Faroes and in Denmark, I retired in '06, but continued as an external examiner in the North Atlantic Faroes until ´14. In '90 I had had a BA in Italian.
In Hibbing I enjoyed being a tenor in Clyde Hill's choirs: at Hibbing High and at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Since then I have been active in several choirs and taken part in various choral activities in Denmark, France, Sweden, Norway, Austria, the Faroes - thanks to Clyde, a short, but formidable conductor !
In January '17 I shall step down as head of the University Extensive Programmes on this isle of Mors. 37 years is enough. I am looking forward to listening to my last "night", a literary critic's lecture on Bob Dylan's texts and music in Nov. (I have been to Bob's two concerts in Herning, my hometown).
Over the years I have guided a lot of groups i...Expand for more
n about a dozen countries. Feeling somewhat forgetful now, I have decided to have a final tour to the Faroes in May. However, if Hibbingites are interested in visiting Føroyar / the Far-oes via KeflavÃk, Iceland, I might be able to join them there- but for more than one day !
In Hibbing my host parents were Florence & James Reinertson. On my second day, in downtown Hibbing, mother Florence told me on which side to walk when with a woman: closest to the gutter !! I have never forgotten this advice - and passed it on to Danes. So sensible. They were wonderful host parents, and I do not recall a single quarrel between Scott and me.
I am still single, but I have Margit, a widow, a really great woman friend for two years, unfortunately no children. In Oct. we shall have our second course at Rødding Folk High School: lectures and historical walks. We are about 200 mls apart, on two islands, she on Langeland, I on Mors, both beautiful and worth seeing. She hates driving, and I never had a license to drive. However, I have got bikes in my stable !
Dear Class Mates, I wish you a memorable Reunion.
About half a dozen of my Class Mates have been to my island. So few !
I hope you will have memorable days at the Reunion,
Kærligste hilsner fra
