Martin's Story
Following a brief career at Bethlehem Steel's Johnstown, PA plant Marty served in the US Army. After completing basic, advanced, and specialty training at Ft Dix, NJ, Fort Jackson, SC, and Ft Gordon, GA, Marty was stationed at Ft. Huachuca, AZ. Over the next 30 months Marty traveled to many Army and Air Force locations installing secure communication systems. In early 1978 Marty left the Army to pursue other adventures.
Sunny southern California became home in July 1979 through December 1987 with GTE California providing the means to live in a beautiful but crowded and expensive playground. Nothing lasts forever and in January 1988 Marty transferred to GTE Communication Systems in Phoenix, AZ (subsequently AG Communication Systems (AGCS) - a Joint Venture between AT&T/GTE then Lucent Techhnologies and Verizon).
During his tenure at the Phoenix headquarters, Marty held increasing levels of responsibility in the Customer Training, Marketing, and Sales departments. He retains fond memories of the time as an account manager, and later as director of sales, for Canadian accounts.

GCS appointed Marty to the position of VP, GTE Sales and he relocated to Coppell, TX to lead the sales team calling on GTE Headquarters. With the Bell Atlantic/GTE merger, Marty became AVP for Verizon Sales with sales teams calling on Verizon's Irving, TX branch Headquarters as well as the former GTE Regions. Eventually Marty became AVP for Switching Sales with responsibility for the sales teams calling on Verizon, AllTel, Valor, and other telephone operating companies.
Early in 2003 Lucent bought Verizon’s remaining stake in AGCS and began integrating systems and people. Marty retained responsibility for the former GTE Regions when he and his team joined the Lucent Customer Team calling on Verizon Wireline.
In August 2005 Marty retired with 25 years service and returned to his Pennsylvania home where he is an active member of the Scalp Level-Paint Volunteer Fire Department (Somerset County Station 616). In 2007 he completed HazMat Operations, Fire Fighter I, and Fire Fighter II training and certification. Marty is also an active member of the Somerset County Swift Water Flood Response Team 670.
