Martin's Story

Update 9/14/20 - For the past several years I've been participating as a "guest" crewman on a 33' sloop. On Tuesday evenings (now on Sunday's) we race on the Delaware River between Burlington, NJ and Bristol, PA. Lots of fun and a reminder as to how old I actually am! Racing is hard work! This past Sunday (09/13/20) we took 1st Place. Felt good! Nice thing though, every boat took the lead sometime during the race. We won because of our captain's extensive experience and the ability of the crew to take orders. Finished up by celebrating at a local Italian restaurant in Bristol Borough eating under a tent. Sailing people are the best! Always courteous and friendly, willing to help at any time. Update 2/29/20 - It's been a while since I last updated my profile. Of course much has happened since my last posting. For starters, It's 2020 and I'm wondering if we'll have a 60th! reunion this year, time is short! Hopefully somebody in the NV area can put something together, perhaps a dinner in a local restaurant. Previously, I reported on the progress of my daughter and daughter-in-law. Rachael is graduating this May from PCOM as a trauma surgeon! She'll be the 1st Doctor Kern in our family! Laura is also graduating in May (PCOM) also! But, she'll be continuing to earn her doctorate. Geez, these girls are smart! Daughter Wendy has been doing just great in her business and recently adopted her first dog - Birdie. Speaking of dogs, Goldie just turned 6 and we love her even more! Michael and David are still doing fine and all four of our kids still live nearby. All the grandkids are healthy and doing well in school. This coming August, my wife and I will be celebrating our 50th! Time sure does fly. I'm still involved with the model railroad club (Abington Lines MRRC) and also the Volvo club (Volvo Sports America) and, of course my sailing buddies in CPYOA (Compac Yacht Owner's Assoc.). Can't have too many hobbies! Enough for now, hopefully someone will take the ball and get things rolling for a reunion this year. Update as of 4/12/18. As reported previously, my "new" daughter-in-law Rachael, has been accepted to and is now attending Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. We're quite proud of her and she's doing very well and has been chosen by her peers to be "team leader". Additionally, my youngest daughter, Laura has provided me with even more bragging rights: She had been promoted to COO of her hospital and has recently been promoted (again) to CEO of Belmont Mental Health Hospital in Philadelphia, PA! And is working on her Master's in mental health. All while both ladies are raising two children each! And my oldest daughter, Wendy, has been doing extremely well in running her business and ranks in the top 10 in her field, in the U.S.! Both boys are doing very well in their vocations and all are healthy. I am one lucky guy! Still wondering if there is ever going to be another reunion? Would be nice to see old schoolmates from FIFTY PLUS YEARS AGO! Gotta go, have to take Gianna (11) to Girl Scouts. Will be taking Ava (11) to an archeological dig at a local state park tomorrow. Busy, busy! BTW, our Labrador retriever, Goldie (wonder dog) has learned to fetch the daily newspaper so I don't have to go to the curb on the coming chilly mornings! Update as of 9/17/15. Last Saturday, my youngest son, David - "the contractor", married Rachael Grow. The very nice wedding was held at David and Rachael's home in Churchville, PA. It was quite a moving ceremony. Although a bit rainy, the rain stopped for the ceremony and resumed immediately afterwards! This was the second marriage for both, but came with the bonus of Ava and Madelyn (Rachael's young children). The Kern family took a giant leap in population. David plans to continue his contracting business and assume the roll of "Mr. Mom" while Rachael pursues her dream of becoming a doctor. So far, she's done quite well and has been accepted to attend Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Got to go now, I'm spending the weekend of the 25th on Barnegat Bay and have to finish getting my little sloop "Pegasus" ready. Update as of 5/3/15. In regards to the current photo: Taken on the Upper Chesapeake 1st weekend in May (2015) on a friends Precision 21. Lucked out with the weather. Was really nice although a little more air would have been great. Met up with several other sailing friends and spent one night gunk-holing off the Bohemia River; perfect sleeping conditions. Looking forward to doing it again. Oh yeah... we won the race! (When there are two or more sailboats on the water, a race is inevitable!) Well, after HS, I drifted a bit in NYC. Eventually the draft caught up with me and I entered the US Army in November of 1964. The wonderful education I received at NVRHS paid off big time in the service. It helped me through over 4 years of service including a year in Viet Nam. Upon returning to the states, I was stationed at McGuire AFB (a big surprise for me!) even though I was in the army. rted to come together while at McGuire. I continued my education at remote campuses of Trenton State and Mercer CCC. while still in the service. One of my dreams actually came true: For a couple of years I was a scientist (of sorts)! At the same time I continued my education at Newark College of Engineering taking courses to further my career with Columbian Carbon Co. (later Cities Service Research) in Cranbury, NJ. Eventually, I started a number of small businesses in the field of commercial and industrial storage products, even being a principal (VP) of a small manufacturing company in Bensalem, PA. But, I have employed myself for quite a few years as an independent distributor. Even today, in retirement?, I still run that business along with a hobby business. My primary interests are, yep, model railroading (blame Sherman Dance for that)(Google Abington Lines), Volvo enthusiast (Volvo Sports America), armchair scientist/astronomer, Kindle advocate (although I still prefer printed books) and my love of sailing my little sloop - Pegasus. Family, of course, is number one and I've been blessed with four wonderful children, Wendy, Michael, Laura and David. Also, 9 grandchildren - Gavin and Gianna, Madison, Morgan and McKenna, Vassar (aka Marty) and Seth (the newest arrival), Also Ava and Madelyn - soon. And I better mention, lest I live to regret it, my wife of 45 years, Barbara. It seems I have over 18000 characters remaining! I'll give you a break and quit now otherwise I can go on and on. A few more words about myself (I warned you!) - So much time has passed that I must confess that I really don't recall a lot of my NVRHS years. I was somewhat of an introvert (I've since come out of my shell - big-time!) and had made a career as an outside salesman for a couple of major corporations. My resume looks pretty impressive, but I'm just a middle class guy who is grateful for the life I've had. I always was a "late bloomer" and life has certainly treated me well, if not lavishly. My favorite singer is Katy Perry! (singing "Roar" as I type this.) Also Sarah Brightman. Hey, variety is the spice of life! (...and guess what? Sarah just came on Pandora!) My favorite quote is: "On your deathbed you don't regret what you did, you regret what you didn't do!", by Randy Pausch. Okay, I've bored you long enough. Update 9/20/2022 The following is NOT from me! This was written by my daughter Laura that she posted on Facebook. I've got four wonderful kids! "It will be hard to describe how special celebrating my dad Marty's 80th birthday was yesterday, but I will try. We wanted to host a party that captured all the things he loved. Marty deserved something grand! Our dad makes friends wherever he goes, whether Volvo, train, or boat clubs, church, boy scouts, former colleagues who become family, his Mechanics for all the cars, all of his children's friends become his too, and so many more. He is the ultimate extravert with a generous and giving heart, always thinking of others and putting their needs above his own. Because of these beautiful qualities, we knew his friends would want to raise a glass to this milestone. So, a party it would be, a very Marty party indeed. Marty learned about his party by receiving an invitation to his party in the mail, "COME CRUISE with US Saturday, August 27th, 2022" (the cover of the invitation is in the post). On the back, read Join us in celebrating a limited edition 1942 Classic with a car cruise throughout beautiful Bucks County, Pa. The car cruise would take place in the morning after a light brunch and would end with a return to a luncheon where all those who did not join in the morning could come together and celebrate Marty. He was so excited at the thought and the theme of his party and had the pleasure in the weeks leading up to hearing who from his long list of friendships would be able to join. The day was perfect. After days of changing weather reports, the sun was bright, the temperature for August was manageable, and the event came together seamlessly. Not a detail was spared; a small car show vibe, banners, balloons, flowers, signs, party-themed t-shirts, a catered lunch, unique deserts (Marty has a sweet tooth) that included his favorite cake, homemade rum cake, and custom cookies in a theme representative of all his favorite things, dogs, cars, trains and sailboats, and a Tesla to drive for the weekend to top it off! Family and friends came near and far and made memories that will be with us throughout our lifetime (thus, such a long post)! We have many people to thank for helping us pull off the ultimate Marty Party. For all of you, we are most grateful. Now on to the rest of the clean-up day and off to bed early tonight. Marty will need a few extra long naps this week to recover from so much excitement and pure joy. We love you, Dad; you are our best guy, so deserving of all the fanfare!" A really big thanks to my family and all my friends! An event that won't be soon forgotten! Best wishes to all, Marty
