Martin's Story
Life
Fragments: Some wonderful childhood pals, whose qualities I appreciate even more today. As my own character flaws embarrass. Indifferent student, even silly, but read on my own. Enjoyed sports but Mother Nature made her intentions clear. Glad I was too distratced to get into much trouble. Similar academic pattern in college (Whittier 1 yr.: UCSB B.A. major history, minors psych., soc. poli. sci.: later Cal Poly Eng. M.A.). Too independent, too immature. After B.A., subbed in Covina & W. Covina Districts, including CHS. Introduction to THE OTHER SIDE. Heard the war drums--read three dozen books to understand their meaning. Student teaching in Ventura. Induction notice. By '69 clear I couldn't save that war-torn land w/o destroying it. Haven in British Columbia. Married wrong person. Worked with disturbed kids among other things. Became more and more serious. ...Expand for more
Divorced. Back in '74, got credential soon. Then job teaching civics at Chino High '76-'86. Efforts to be absolutely fair probably moderated my liberal views. Currently, moderate & registered Independent. Next taught writing at Mt.SAC & Chaffey College. Teaching biggest effort of my life--maybe worth it, never really know. In '82 married soulmate & very respected Eng. teacher at Chino, later at Mt. SAC. Even simple people like me need to be understood. Traveled 3-8 wks each summer until health problems worsened. Sailed down Nile, crossed into East Germany, got sick in Tashkent but love Swiss Alps. Now in Southern Oregon, land of comprehensible scale. Janet to retire too. Health problems and scares increase urgency of search for equanimity. Includes quietest hedonism. Sincere apologies to those I treated callously--and those whose good deeds I took for granted.
