Marty's Story

I always wanted to be a psychologist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were almost right. I NEED a psychologist. LOL Half kidding. I didn't go to college after high school. I became what is known as a "non-traditional student" by finally starting as a freshman at 35 years-old. I got my bachelor's degree in psychology and got half-way through my master's and my job side-tracked me by transferring me 200 miles away. Never got back on track, but I'm good where I am. To tell you the truth, psychology can be a soul-tearing job. My practicums sent me home depressed on quite a few days. I spent my mid twenties through early thirties singing in a hard rock band. That was a gas! Played in the tri-state area of Ohio-Michigan-Indiana. Some of you may have seen us. The band was called Wraith. Lot's of cool stories from that time. Maybe I'll relate some here in a blog or something. Maybe... I started out in the Food Service industry at fifteen in Napoleon working in a small Italian Restaurant. A year after graduation, I was Kitchen Manager at the Truck Stop. I worked a few years feeding people, including being Food and Beverage Director at the Napoleon Holiday Inn. In my mid to late twenties I worked in retail and worked as the guy that kills the cattle at a slaughterhouse. Great stories there too believe it or not. During late twenties to early ...Expand for more
thirties was the band years. Jobs were whatever would allow me the freedom to play weekends and eventually longer. I got back into food service after marrying and moving to Florida and have done that ever since. I worked full time as an executive chef during college as well as being a 20 hour a week Music Director for our campus radio station. I'm not sure if I slept for those years or not.... I'm still in food service, just as management now. Years as a chef was cool, but an office is cooler. The woman I am married to is also a Napoleon native/graduate. We never met while we both lived in Napoleon though. She is the sister of the third drummer in a band I was in. I met her when she came to a gig we were playing in McClure which turned out to be one of her last days as an Ohioan. She was moving to Florida to start her teaching career. I was introduced to her that night by her brother, but it was just one of those social "Oh, you're Joe's sister" moments. A quick hello and goodbye. I did think she was pretty hot though... Later we met in a more social aspect while she was up visiting and we talked and I guess both found some attraction. I know I did. We eventually got married and we settled in Florida. We're still there and I am very happy and still love her as much as ever. I'm not an easy person to live with, but Jackie has the patience, sense of humor and strength to do it . Thank God!
