Marty's Story

Thirty five years? No way. What have I been up to? Let's see - U of I, IBM in Rochester MN, married, travel, acting, kid, acting, kid, kid, take family to England, back again, dude ranch, horse, kid(?!!!!), vasectomy, plateau at work, get tired of IBM, stick it out against pressure at IBM, laid off from IBM after 30.5 years - typical. Start over - computer consultant, travel, Charlotte, Toronto, try to catch up on 30 years of quantum physics, have Mother in St. Jospeh's hospital (doing better Thank God!) which coincides with my 35th class reunion, which I attended yesterday! My thoughts after our reunion yesterday - hmmmmm, for starters I am VERY glad that I was (apparently) nice in High School. Whew. Also I cannot really believe I was so lucky to start out with so many cool sensible great people! And how have you all stayed so young?! It must be the water. In a way, right now, I feel like I did when I left high school. Three of my kids are off and running, and my 'real' job is over, an...Expand for more
d now I need to find my next career. If I had my wish my job would be in particle physics, and I WILL be visiting the large hadron collider at CERN in Switzerland when they (hopefully!) start it up in November, but even I am not crazy enough to think that is the way my path lies. No, it makes sense to re-use the Computer WebSphere stuff I've already learned, so particle physics must remain my avocation and not my vocation. In the meantime I act, and shotput and discus and javelin. Yeah, I participate in the Star of the North games here in Minnesota. I've qualified for nationals but have never attended. I also act whenever I can, and especially if someone is silly enough to pay me for it. Usually at the Mayo clinic. To date my favorite role was Officer Lockstock in "Urinetown, the Musical." Yeah, I know, terrible title, but it really is a great show, and topical, too. I don't know what the future holds for me, but I'm not done yet. I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.
