Marvin's Story
I joined the Navy in the summer of 1966 and had my very first plane ride when the Navy sent me to San Diego, Ca. for basic training. I stayed in California, attending a Navy Data Processing school, until September of that year (anyone remember the song "See you In September"?). I was next stationed in Washington, D.C. for 2 years where I endured a scary ride on a rock pelted public bus the night that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. My next duty station was London, England where I served for the next, most unforgettable, 3+ years. While in England I joined up with some brothers from the Air Force and we formed a singing group. We performed mostly at Air Force bases, but we did do a one-night "Headliner" at some club in Liverpool. We even got a reco...Expand for more
rding contract and recorded at Abbey Road Studios! (Yes, THAT Abbey Road!) We even released a 45.(remember 45's ?) I got to meet numerous celebrities like Jackie Wilson, The Stylistics, Freda Payne and Joe Frazier to name a few. (Anyone remember "Joe Frazier and The Knockouts" - Joe's short lived attempt at singing?) What a time. Some years after leaving the Navy I landed at Harris Bank in Chicago for 10 years and then I went to work for Bank One in Columbus, Ohio. While in Columbus, I landed a spot on Hollywood Squares as a contestant. I won a little bit of cash, but not enough to last more than that one show. I returned to Chicago again in 2002 just prior to Bank One being sold to JPMorgan Chase. I now live in Matteson, Illinois with my wife of 14 years.
