After high school I went to UNC, Chapel Hill (back then there was no UNC except Chapel Hill). James Gilbert and I roomed together our freshman year. He inadvisably transferred to NC State the next year. I stayed on, majoring in psychology. I was trying to understand my wacky self. After I graduated there (by the skin of my teeth), I worked at Sears in Spartanburg as a management trainee (that was a joke, me a mgt. trainee!) I was there for 3 years, ending up as the carpet dept.mgr..I quit there to open a carpet store in Columbus, which failed after 4 years (I think), mostly because of my immaturity, leaving my ego quite depressed. For a summer my old roommate, James Gilbert hired me (as slave labor) but then that fall after the election I was appointed Polk County Tax Collector. I was appreciative for the job but it was just too confining. I started installing carpet for a living, which I had learned while trying to make the carpet business work.
