Marvin's Story
After high school I went to UNC, Chapel Hill (back then there was no UNC except Chapel Hill). James Gilbert and I roomed together our freshman year. He inadvisably transferred to NC State the next year. I stayed on, majoring in psychology. I was trying to understand my wacky self.
After I graduated there (by the skin of my teeth), I worked at Sears in Spartanburg as a management trainee (that was a joke, me a mgt. trainee!) I was there for 3 years, ending up as the carpet dept.mgr..I quit there to open a carpet store in Columbus, which failed after 4 years (I think), mostly because of my immaturity, leaving my ego quite depressed. For a summer my old roommate, James Gilbert hired me (as slave labor) but then that fall after the election I was appointed Polk County Tax Collector. I was appreciative for the job but it was just too confining. I started installing carpet for a living, which I had learned while trying to make the carpet business work. st of my adult life....In 2002 My brother, Alvin, and I purchased 10 acres in Green Creek (Sandy Plains really, Gilbert Rd.) for me to plant a commercial vineyard and for Alvin to build a winery. It was a lot of fun for several years and seemed what I was born to do. However, there was a problem. I had become a Christian in 1996. I rationalized that since I no longer drank or made wine, I was O.K., but God convinced me through a witness that I was influencing others to drink wine. I painfully decided to sell the vineyard, so I could witness for the Lord better. The Lord sent the right person to me who made a generous offer, which accepted, and now I am retired, almost. I am a volunteer at Buncombe Correctional Center giving Bible studies and mentoring inmates who are close to being released. God has blessed me in so many ways, it's time for me to give back a little to Him. For whoever might read this, don't wait, invite Jesus into your life today. It will be the wisest thing you have ever done! I know. My life began when I surrendered my old life to Him so that His new life could begin in me.
