Mary's Story

As we travel this journey we've come to know as LIFE we encounter adversity. Closely followed by resilence, this is what molds us into the type of person we are today. Our Faith is what will bring us through all our challenges life has to offer. After leaving Bel Air I moved to Southern California and lived there 5 yrs. Got to experience the beautiful scenery and beaches they have to offer. Oh, lets not forget Disneyland, Hollywood, Knotts Berry Farm. Universal Studios and just too many more to list. I returned back to El Paso only to be drawn to Houston, Texas after a vacation there in 1980. I found a good balance living there and learned how to drive among the 5 million people living there. I lived in Houston, Tx. for 28yrs. My decision to leave Houston and move to Dallas area came after my Grand kids started to arrive. By this time I had faced the greatest challenge in life and that was to finish raising my youngest son after my husband of 10yrs passed away. My son at the time was 2yrs. old when we lost his Dad. Vowing never to remarry again I continued to grow and get to know Mary. For so many years I had been the one to do for others and accomodate their every beckoning call. As a result I found myself not really fitting in with all couples group whether it was friends or relatives. So I made the decision to start traveling and get to experience other cultures. I tried to invite friends and sisters alike only to be turned down due to finances. So I moved on and to this date have been to Cancun, Mx more times than I can recall my last trip there was 1999. Now with the unpleasantries of wars they are having I refuse to go there. In late 06-07 rang in the New Year in Crested Butte, Colorado got to see Olympic Snowboarder Shawn White free styling and entertaining the crowd. No, I do not ski I am scared to break my bones. In 08 Jamaica and their steel drums called out and so I visited Negril, Jamaica all inclusive is the way I roll. The resort was over the top and have some memories to last me life time. I did parasail and felt like an angel floating above the Carribean. Early in 09 Las Vegas welcomed Gracie (Ex-Highlander) and I and have to say Lady Luck was with me that time around. Vegas has changed so much recommend The Paris. The Venitian is the largest resort and casino in Las Vegas and now has become my favorite place when I am in Vegas. Later part of 09 Paradise Island, Bahamas is where I strolled the tourqouise waters of their white sandy beach. Went on a tour into Nassu and got to see Anna Nicoles house where she passed away. Also toured 2 of their Forts where years past the Bahamas was under British rule. Got to see where the cannons were set up and the amunition that hepled defend the people from pirates trying to come inland and rob the people that lived there. As I strolled down below to the bunker part of the Fort you can visably see where some of the men carved their names into the walls and dated it going back to the 1800's. As I placed my hand over their names I felt somewhat of a connection with one whom has long departed but is not forgotten. I made a later trip back to Vegas with my oldest son and let him know I was taking him to go and see Carlos Santana in 09. That was a period where Mom and Son bonded and know long after I am gone he will smile when he thinks of this time. Currently my oldest son is working in Afganistan as a Journeyman Electrician. We stay in touch via email and he called us this past Sunday. He sounded like he might be in El Paso he came in so clear. It touched my heart as I heard him sing Happy Birthday to his now 3yr old son. As I fought the tears back I thought Girl! you did raise him to be the man he has become. He's an Ex-Marine and I am ever so proud of him. SEMPER FII ........Lord Keep Him Safe His Children & Wife Need Him and so do I. In 2010 I was scheduled to go to Hawaii only to cancel in October. I reconnected with my first boyfriend ever. What a wonderful 5mos. that played out to be. So I took small trips traveled to San Antonio, Tx, Austin, Tx, and Houston, Tx. Now here we are 2011 as I reflect back on my life I can honestly say it has been a wonderful experience. This year I will try and make that Hawaii trip I cancelled in 2010 and March 2011 Celine Dion is going to open at Ceasar's Palace I bought my ticket back in 7-2010 I am sooooo there!!! Yes, folks in March 2011 I flew in for Celine Dion's Show. She was on her 2nd night of performing and with no surprise both her shows were sold out. Her show is clean adult entertainment, her gowns were coture of course and she sang this song in French with so much emotion I cried listening to her. At the end of the song you could see Celine was also crying as were so many of her fans watching the show. In my 20's played wife and mommy, in my 30's made the rounds ladies night, 40's it was all about career and 50's finished raising my youngest and net work with Professional Grps. Now 60's well I have to say I am happy, some times I wish I had a significant other with no strings attached. No, let me re-phrase that if I may....If Lord was to send me a good ole boy with good values and love for the Lord and allow me to be my own person YES! I would re-consider marriage. I do not drink except perhaps ocassionally, I do not smoke or have any bad habits. Love the Lord with all my being and know the day I am called to go Home and be with him it will just be a continuation of caring for others less fortunate than myself as I do now. Travel to places unknow to me. My Fellow Highlanders I guess you could say I have run the gamut ranging from sadness to happiness and completed full circle. Be Blessed and Run The Good Race and Continue to Climb that mountain. ****On July 5 2011 our Faith was shaken to the core as our family prepared to say good-bye to our beloved Mother whom I refer to as Queen of Hearts. The nights were long and the days became a blurr as we prepared for her Memorial Service. Through this ordeal I encourage those of you who still have your parents stay in touch with them. Lift them up when they are not feeling well. Encourage them when they are sad and be sure to take time to let them know how much they mean to you. Let us not forget Our Parents are Yesterdays Children and they have put in their time to raise their families through sacrafice and tears of love. ****December 10th, 2011 ANDRE BOCELLI at MGM Las Vegas, NV. I will let you all know how it went. I am so ready to go and enjoy this show. He is a Legend in his time. 12-10-2011......Arrived in Las Vegas and the town had a feel of Excitement and Joy and was dressed all a glow as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. As I made my way through the airport towards baggage claim there were marquees announicing Andrea Bocelli in Concert tonight. This in itself was reason enough to be in Las Vegas for me. For many of us we might not realize that this man whom in my book is a Legend became blind at the age of 12yrs due to congenital glacoma and a blow to the head he received while playing goal in a soccer game. Andrea Bocelli was born September 22, 1958 in Lajitco, Pisa Tuscany, Italy. Andrea started his signing career in the late 1980's as he sang in piano bars throug...Expand for more
hout Italy.Prior to this he earned a degree in Law at the University of Pisa. Andrea was singing at a party and a scout discovered him and signed him to a record contract in 1993. To be in the same room as Mr. Bocellli you become aware of so many emotions, mesmerized is what one becomes. You could have heard a pin drop as everyone prepared for 2 hours of non stop entertainment at its' finest. My favorite which made the hairs on my arms stand were Amazing Grace, More and The Prayer. Was the show good you might ask? Yes! he received 4 standing ovations and each time came out to give his fans more. Andrea Bocelli God Bless you, you are such an inspration for so many of us who Love you Dearly. Can't wait to go out and purchase your new CD Concerto In Central Park. For you die hard FANS out there he will be in Dallas at The American Airlines Center November 2012. Tickets go on sale March 2012. Hope to see you there. Till my next adventure continue to be the best you can. ******Fellow Highlanders it has been awile since I've been able to bring you inspiration on places to go and visit. May 11th 2012, arrived in El Paso this was Mothers Day weekend and it would mean our first year without Mother. I along with my sister took her flowers at Ft Bliss Cemetary as we paid our respects to her. The following day Sunday my sister and I loaded up we headed out to Santa Fe, New Mexico to go visit Loretto Chapel and The Miraculous Staircase. We arrived 1hr before they closed. *Read story on the internet must to go and see if you get time. The one thing I realized is that the moment you set foot in the chapel you feel the presence of The Holy Spirit so profound, you do not want to leave there. We left El Paso and it was 87 degrees and arrived Santa Fe and it was 45 degrees because it had rained along with the altitude. The town itself was quaint and one is taken by the architect of this wonderful town. Shops and vendors galore selling crafts and silver and torqouise jewelery. Knowing we still needed to get to Show Low, Az./Pine Top, Az. decided to hit the road asap. We visited my cousin in her summer house elevation 7000 ft fresh clean air and pine trees that went to the skies. Arrived Sunday night and left Tuesday morning. While in Pine Top we visited Show Low Lake along with 3 others. Lots and lots of camp grounds and nautural spring in one location. City girl could not resist got down and refilled my water bottle. To my surprise water was very cold and it tasted so good. They have communities set up for folks that have built and retired there. We heard story about lady who decided to walk her puppy before daylight broke only to be encountered by bear who took the life of the puppy and her as well. On the way to San Diego we took Hwy 67 through Snake River Canyon scenic route. There are several spots you can stop and take pictures or film movie. I threw my car into low gear and cruised all way down by time we hit Globe we had used less than 1/4 tank gas. Coming through Tucson around noon the temperature was 107 degrees! Gee wiz! Louise how do people live under these conditions! Arrived in Ocean Side, Calif 4:30PM got checked into our room freshened up and off we went to Joe's Crab Shack for dinner. It sits right on the Marina and the view is AWESOME! The following morning we had our plan of attack ready we headed out at 10:00AM to our adventure for the day. We drove down the Intercostal Hwy put our windows down and opened up the sun roof allowing salt air to blow in. Took time to stop to see the surfers at least 20 of them trying to catch the next wave. Visited Birch Aquarium across from University of California San Diego. Take time to see what the building across from aquarium has to offer in regards to Global Warming INTERESTING! Next pit stop Old Town San Diego, this is where California first started as a state. Restaurants everywhere and shops with all sorts of crafts. Getting hungry and close to lunch so we headed to Del Coronado Hotel for lunch. Their Mojitos are soooo refreshing and the view is Spectacular of the Pacific Ocean. Make sure you have camera charged up there are so many different types of flowers and their landscaping is over the top. They have an underground parking directly across from the Hotel it is lit up and safe. The following day we headed out to San Clemente, Calif to visit Casa Romantica and go see what that part of Calif. had to offer. We drove around and discovered La Pachanga Casino the largest Casino in Calif. Some how got turned around and wound up at the entrance of Camp Pendleton Marine Corp Training Center. The following day we moved from Oceanside to DelMar, Calif. I can honestly say I left my heart in Del Mar. this is a laid back town where people just enjoy life. We had lunch at an out doors cafe and recall the scent of lavender growing in this huge pot made out of pottery. So we are now winding down folks tomorrow is Friday and we are headed back to El Paso at 5:00AM California I plan to come visit again hopefully next year and till then may your palm trees continue to reach for the sky and the crash of the surf lull one to sleep. Next year will rent a house for week. That's the best way to invite friends or family and split the cost. Today is 17th of May 2012 sissy and I arrive in El Paso. The family is all there at Dad's WOW what a Welcome home I am thinking. This is a day unlike any other I will never forget.......my son Joedy returned from completing his contract working in Afganistan on May 1st and he was killed as his 92' Harley Soft Tail went out of control. Dear God in Heaven were the first words out of my mouth. The following day after 2 1/2 hrs of sleep I was driving back to Dallas to go be by his side as he lay on life support. As we were coming into Odessa it was confirmed he was brain dead. I gave Thanks to our Heavenly Father for the 43yrs he allowed Joedy to be in my life. His time was up here on earth and it was now time for him to Soar like an Eagle and fly High Above. I love you son and will assist with the children and do what I can. Fellow Highlanders....life is so Precious one just never knows when God will whisper it is time come home with me. I encourage you to tell one another family and your children how much they mean to you. As you depart from a visit or gathering tell one another "I Love You." I had invited Joedy to go on this trip with me and he said No he was tired of traveling this past year so he would stay with those he loved and missed so much his wife and children. I looked back as I walked to my car headed to work and said "Son, you have taken the weight of the world off my shoulders by coming home." Then I looked at him and said I love you and heard his chuckle as he said I love you too Mom." Today makes a week since I returned back from my 2nd trip to San Diego, Calif. This year I visited Oceanside, Calif, costa Mesa, Long Beach & Anneheim, Calif. Calif. is in sheer devastation once you leave San Diego area. So very very dry and as a result was unable to travel into LA and visit the Stars Walk Way in Hollywood. Fires every where sure glad to be back in Lone Star State.....Next year will probably head out to Colorado or Florida..... Lots of Love, Mary Manuel (Alvarez)
