Mary's Story
After graduation in 1960 I married Jerry Free in 1962....we raised 4 children and I worked at the SIU-E Rape & Sexual Abtuse Care Center as a Crisis Counselor....I traveled to 11 different counties in Illinois and responded to hospitals and police stations whenever there was a rape or incest case reported. I later worked at an alcohol and drug rehab, and a domestic violence shelter......I lost my husband of 43 years to cancer in 2005......I then spent most of my time as a volunteer providing services in 3 prisons in Illinois and 7 in Missouri. July 23rd, 2011 I married a lifetime friend BIlly J. Sullivan. we went to Europe for a 30 day honeymoon and now he and I go to the same prisons I went to before and provide volunteer services. I was a victim of child abuse as a ...Expand for more
child.....having been sold by my blood mother to a very dysfunctional adoptive family. I was a Illinois Certified Police Trainer in an effort to teach criminal justice personnel how to conduct an appropriate police report from victims of sexual assault. I also provide Women's Retreats at churchs and civic organizations when asked to do so. My husband accompanies me in these endeavors. We still live in Granite City and are both retired, for whatever that means. I think it simply means I dont get a paycheck...but I stay busy. We are both professing Christians and talk about our faith and the part that it played in my recovery as a victim of abuse. Bill has 3 children living and lost 2 sons to a disease early in their lives......I have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.
