Mary's Story

Life Never really knew quite knew what I wanted to be when I graduated from Kenwood's excellent commercial course, but very quickly realized that being a "secretary" or "transcriptionist" wasn't really my bag. I've never liked taking orders. As luck happened, within the same week I received job offers for "personnelist" or "secretarial" type positions at Martin-Marietta and Edgewood Arsenal, MD. I decided on Uncle Sam and couldn't have made a better choice. I stayed on for 37 years and retired as a GS-13, Special Agent in Charge. Yes, can you believe it, "little Mary." I actually became a Federal Agent. I attended evening college after a divorce from my first husband in the early 1970's. I have two wonderful and very handsome sons, ages 33 and 35. After being employed with the U.S. Army, then the U.S.Public Health Service, and beginning my college studies at Towson State, I eventually transferred over to work with the Department of Defense in 1980. I found my niche' and began gradually working my way up the management "chain." I remarried in 1990 to my current spouse, a retired enginner from AT&T, Hunt Valley, MD. Sam chose to retire when he married his "Special Agent", and has moved with me across the states. As my career began to pick up, the children entered college, and I began to move to various supervisory/managerial positions throughout the Agency. I served in Ft. Meade, Hanover, MD, Towson, MD; then Augusta, GA, also in Phoenix, AZ, and then Special Agent in Charge of th...Expand for more
e field office in Philadelphia, PA. Through the years, I traveled VERY freuently throughout the U.S., (too frequently!!), but sure got to see the good ol' USA. (I should have done all this before our World History classes at Kenwood... (-:) Uncle Sam offered a few very enticing "buyouts" in early 2003. I decided after 37 years and 4 months of civil service, it was time to move on to a "retirement career." Post-retirement, I'm presently a supervisory contract investigator with various DoD contractors. I work as I chose and at my pace, not anyone else's, so, of course, I'm loving life. I've been asked to return to a full time position, but just don't know... I'm not ready to quit yet and will work until I decide I've had enough fun, but presently having too much fun doing what I enjoy. This is my "informal" biography! Where is everyone else from that wonderful "Deep Purple" senior prom and the "Thunderbird Drive-in?" If there is anyone else out there who would be interested in setting up a 45 year reunion, let me know as I'd be happy to assist in pulling something together. In Sep 2004, Sam and I settled into our retirement location in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and are just 10 minutes from the Isle of Palm and Sullivan Island beaches. Lovely low country environment, warm weather area and we're just loving life! If anyone is ever in the area please look me up as I'm listed in the local directory - we'd love to share the fun of living in this area and would love to see my former classmates!
