Dr Mary Beth's Story

i remember that our graduating class was the largest Hilltop had ever had (about 600) -- they even had to split the school into Hilltop and Bonita if I remember right. That same year my Dad retired from the Navy and my family moved to the San Fernando Valley. One thing to remember about me back then, was that I was a Candy Striper at Chula Vista Hospital as a future nurse, and, I was in the Art club who silk-screened the football ribbons for Friday's games. After all that experience in a hospital, I went into education! Who can figure with destinies?? I started my college/university career at summer school at Southwestern J. C. in Chula Vista in 1963 right after graduation from Hilltop. I finished my formal education in 1997, at the University of San Francisco with my doctorate in Private School Administration specializing in The Laws Affecting Students With Special Needs in Private Schools. I had attended colleges and universities that were near my workplaces (schools) and residences over the years, namely University of San Diego, Citrus Junior College, Valley Junior College, Mount San Antonio Junior College, Mount Saint Mary's College at Chalon Campus, Mount Saint Mary's at Doheny Campus (for my B.A. and CA Teaching Credential), and finally University of San Francisco, L.A. Satellite and Main Campuses (for my M.A. and Ed.D.). My informal education from living, loving, and other experiences, will continue forever. My career began in 1964, as a teacher, a...Expand for more
nd as a Benedictine Nun in the Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, until 1970, when I returned home from the convent. After that, I continued teaching in the same Archdiocese as a lay teacher, until 1995. For two of those years my teaching moved temporarily overseas to international schools in Japan and in Saudi Arabia, while my husband, Bill, worked in each of those countries as a commercial Flight Engineer. Upon returning to the U.S., and after completion of my doctoral studies, I went to work for the Diocese of San Bernardino where I spent 12 more years as a Catholic School Principal. I retired in 2010. I also consulted, lectured, and wrote articles nationally about Private School Law during those final active years and for a while after. In my personal life, after leaving the Benedictine Order in 1970, I met and married my husband, Bill, in 1977. He was a widower with two children, Linda and Billy. They are both now living in Northern California. A highlight of our lives is our grandson, Jason, who graduated from U.S.C., School of Cinema/Television, and is now working in the "Industry" in China. We spent the first part of our retirement years caring for my parents who have both now gone to heaven. We are in hopes of enjoying the rest of our lives traveling and writing, and enjoying some together time after so many years of separation caused by world-wide and national careers as a international flight crew member, and as an educator.
