Mary's Story

Life My family moved a lot when I was a child. After spending a few years in Schaumburg, Illinois, we moved to Claremont, California just in time for fifth grade. Thank goodness we stayed put after that, and I got to go to junior high and high school in one place. I feel fortunate and grateful to have had the life experiences I've crammed into my years since high school. People who knew me at Claremont won't be surprised to find out I continued acting, singing, and writing at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and throughout my life. I've been a newspaper columnist for The Oregonian in Portland, Oregon since 1987. Before that I had a career in TV news and hosted TV talk shows in Seattle and Portland. I've done theater along the way, and have sung hundreds of commercial jingles (I was the singing voice of a roll of Charmin toilet paper once -- did you recognize my voice???) but the accomplishment that was hardest and brought me the most pleasure was raising my daughter, Alex. She's a young opera singer living in New York City, who sings much better than I ever did. ...Expand for more
Life has not been without challenges or hard times, but on the whole it's been good. Portland is a small city that feels just about perfect. It has seasons, which I missed when I lived in California, and even though it's small compared to L.A. there's enough going on -- all within five minutes of my home -- that I never get bored. I miss the sun, though, and the beach on hot days, and Claremont on the Fourth of July. I do miss Claremont --it will always be the perfect home town to me. Dave Beck feels the same. Dave, who was in our Claremont class of 1969, and I got reacquainted at a reunion, spent four years becoming best friends, and were married in 2005. He has moved to Portland and is growing to appreciate green trees instead of the beautiful golden hills of Southern California. Fortunately, we have great golf courses in the Northwest. We'd love to hear from anyone who might enjoy reminiscing or who might be coming through Portland. I hope everyone who reads this has truly enjoyed the years since we last saw one another, and appreciates Claremont as we do.

It was a citrus-themed wedding, since Claremont was filled with orange and lemon groves, and at the reception we toasted with Lemon Drops. (We also served Beck's beer.)
My wedding skirt was made from my high school prom dress. Fitting, since we went through high school together.
