Mary's Story

Life August 14, 2008 After high school I went to Burlington Beauty Academy in Burlington, IA. After graduating from there and passing my State Board exam I worked as a hairstylist in Ft.Madison, IA for 7 mos. before getting married to my husband, Richard. We moved to Phoenix, AZ after our marriage and 3 mo. later we moved to CA. We lived in 3 places in CA in 6 mo. -Blythe, Bakersfield and Monterey Park. Right before Thanksgiving 1967 we moved back to Ft.Madison, IA. My husband got a job with the Sinclair Chemical CO. (fertilizer) and worked there through several changes in the company. It became Arco and then First Miss; both fertilizer. The company closed in 1982 and he was out of work for 13 mo. We ended up living in Ft. Madison 17 1/2 yr. before moving to Henderson, KY where my husband was employed with another fertilizer company (Williams). We lived there a yr. and 4 mo. before moving to Tulsa, OK in Oct. of 1986. We ended up living there for only 9 mo. as the company sold it's fertilizer facilities to Freeport McMoran so we moved to Louisiana in July of 1987. We lived in Slidell for 3 yr. and 9 mo. when we moved to a town near Memphis, TN. (Apr. 1st, 1991) where he was employed once again by a fertilizer company called Arcadian. They sold out to a Canadian company called PCS in 1998 and in 2000 they decided to move the office staff in TN to Chicago. We thought we would move, but after going there househunting we changed our mind and my husband went there in July without me and worked for 7 mo. after which he took retirement. He came back here and worked for a discount dept. store called Steinmart in the Receiving dept. until the end of July of 2006 when he retired again. Our 3 daughters all graduated from high school since we have been here. All 3 have graduated college here and the oldest two have gotten married here as well. April lived here and worked for FedEX until July1st, 2007 when she ...Expand for more
and her husband moved to North Liberty, IA (just north of Iowa City, IA) where her husband, Lee, is an Internal Medicine Resident at the University of IA Hospital there. Our middle daughter lives in Olive Branch, MS which is about 20 to 30 min. from here. She works here as a Certified Veterinary Technologist. Unfortunately, she is in the process of getting a divorce after 7 and a half yr. of marriage. Our youngest daughter, Aimee, moved to Boston in Jan. of 2005 to manage a store called Patagonia. She had managed a sporting goods store in Memphis from June 2001 until the end of 2004. The first of Sept. of 2006 she was transferred to Pasadena, CA to manage a store there, but has now changed jobs starting this month (Aug. '08) and will be Marketing Director of a company called New Belgium. She is still single. April and Lee blessed me with my first & only grandchild on Sept. 11 of '07. I have a lot of grand animals though!!! I worked as a hairstylist again after moving back to Ft. Madison from CA. I worked for 3 yr. in that capacity before I stopped so we could start having a family. I have, also, worked as a Teacher's Aide, grocery clerk, cafeteria monitor, cafeteria server, cafeteria cashier and my last job was as a sales associate in a frame & art shop. My last year there I managed the shop for my boss as he retired and moved to GA. He decided to close the shop the end of Feb. of '06. I now am a household specialist!! Unfortunately, the pay isn't very good. Ha!! Ha!! I have enjoyed living in different places as I have got to meet so many different people and see a lot of different places, but I do miss seeing old friends. The saddest part of my life so far is the death of my father in Nov. 2003 and then my mother in Jan. of 2008. I was so sorry to have to miss the 60's Reunion, but it came at the same time as my grandson, Matthew's, birth and I just had to be there for that occasion!
