Mary Yeager:

CLASS OF 1964
Leon High SchoolClass of 1964
Leon, KS

Mary's Story

I was a student of the Leon Unified School District from 6th grade thru highschool. I was the president of the class of' 1964. Our class was pretty small, so I, like most of the members of my class, was active in sports activities, music, pep squad, etc. I loved the atmosphere in Leon, it seamed like everyone had a can-do spirit. My two older brothers also graduated from LHS. They both married local girls. My brother Charles (Chuck) Donham married Patty Larson. He graduated with the class of 1960 and Patty graduated with the class of 1962. My other brother Dave Donham married Lisa Morris. Dave also graduated with the class of 1962 and Lisa graduated with the class of 1963. Dave passed away in 2008 after a long fight with cancer. After I graduated in spring of 1964, I was married to Robert (Bob) Yeager on June 13, 1964. After I attended one semester at Butler Junior College, we moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where I had jobs at a drugstore as head cashier, and then at The Boeing Company first as a clerical assistant then as a junior secretary. I worked overtime for a group that was compiling lists of all redundant parts on the Apollo space capsules. I was told that these lists were put on micro-fish that could be used by astronaughts to locate extra parts that could be borrowed to replace a lost or damaged part in a more crucial area of the spacecraft. Bob and I had a daughter, Theresa, in February 1967, while we were living in Douglas, KS, I mostly took care of her and enjoyed watching her grow. We moved to the Grand Prairie/Arlington, TX area where Bob worked for Ling Temco Vought designing, developing and buillding the leading edge of the space shuttle. His work group developed the fireproof tiles that were needed during the space shuttle's re-entry process. He also designed the tools to build the system of protective space shields for the helmets worn by the astronaughts. We moved to Moore, OK for a couple of years. Then to Lafayette, LA, and eventually to New Orleans. Bob worked for Bell Aerospace building the Marine landing craft the LC Jeff-B and also worked on the SES100-B, both were Air Cushioned Vehicles Theresa began Kindergarten in Lafayette, then transferred to New Orleans schools. I joined the Newcomers Club, learning much about the New Orleans area traditions during the two years we spent there. We attended the Newcomers Club Marti Gras Balls. We had a great time viewing the many Marti Gras Parades. I participated in many of the groups making up the Newcomers Club. We moved back to Arlington, TX, when Bob was recalled by Vought Aerospace. We had a son, Brian, in August 1974, and a second son, Eric, in December 1975. Our family temporarily moved to Washington State as part of an industry-assist program between Bell Helicopter and The Boeing Company. We left there, returning to life in Arlington, TX, just ahead of ...Expand for more
Mount St. Helens blowing her top. I had a life threatening emergency requiring open heart surgery in August 1981. Apparently I had Rheumatic Fever when I was 3 or 4 years old, it had damaged the arteries in my heart. I had a serious talk with God. I was a little slowed down at that point, but I had 3 kids to raise. My life has been blessed. In 1984, Bob was offered and accepted, a position with Northrop Advanced Systems Division, in Pico Rivera, CA, working on the Secret B2 Bomber Program. He was working there when the 6.0 Whittier Earthquake occurred centered about 1 mile from where he worked. We bought a house in Rialto, CA, we still live here. With my daughter a senior class student, I went back to night-school classes at Eisenhower High School here in Rialto. I took classes in Bookkeeping, Business Management and Business Machines. I learned the in's and out's of Word Processing Machines and some important basics of Computers. I just wanted to be able to help my kids learn a little about computers. When my teacher went on Maternity Leave, our substitute teacher suggested I try working for a temporary agency to see if I would enjoy rejoining the workforce. I worked one day in a Law office, hated it. The next position I was offered was in a county office. I loved it, and they liked me, so I stayed there until they ran out of budget. Next after being called several times to fill in at another county office, I said I would go back to work after the New Year. I was a temporary receptionist for nearly a year. Then tested and got on the list to work directly for the office of the San Bernardino County Agriculture Commissioner. I got the position and when I was finished with my regular work,I studied the manuals for all the machines in our office, including the computers. I became the computer go-to person whenever our computer supervisor wasn't availaable. I loved it. ln December 1989, I had to have another open heart surgery to replace the Mitral Valve in my heart. I was back to work on March 27, 1990, the very same day our first grandson, Brandon, was born. I had to have another open heart surgery to replace my Aorta Valve in my heart in September 2007. I loved my job with the San Bernardino County Agriculture Commissioner's office. I continued working there until I retired on June 20th, 2009. My husband, Bob, decided to take his retirement from The Boeing Aerospace Company in October 2009. Our three children, all adults now, live in Southern California as do all of our grandchildren. We are going to have another grandchild in June or July. Life is still good. The members of the Class of '64 will be meeting for the 50th Reunion of our class on August 30, 2014, at the Marriott Hotel in Wichita. For more information about the reunion, contact Barbara Brown McKee. I hope to see you all there. Mary Donham Yeager
