Mary's Story

I'm a graduate of James Marshal High School, California Lutheran University with a BA, and have a Kindergarten - 8th grade teaching credential from CLC, a Specialialist Education credential from San Diego State University, a Resource Specialist certificate from SDSU, and a Master's Degree in Special Education from SDSU. I've taught elementary, middle, and high school, general ed. and Special Ed. for 39 years. I retired in 2008 and live in San Diego, CA with my husband, Richard. We have 3 wonderful grown children. No grandchildren yet. I am involved in my church, in Delta Kappa Gamma - a honor society for women educators, in Bible study (BSF), and 2 mission organizations. I've been on 3 mission trips to Africa since 2013 - 2 to Malawi (2013 & 2014) and 1 to Kenya ...Expand for more
(2015). Both nondenominational Christian organizations work with the grandmothers who are raising orphans of HIV/aides and other causes of the deaths of their parents. (Check out Gogo Grandmothers on-line) My project in 2 of these mission trips was to bring washable menstrual pad kits and to teach young women in villages how to sew the kits. Girls of menstrual age tend to stay home from school during their periods because they have no access to sanitary products. They typically drop out and marry too young. This perpetuates the downward spiral of ignorance and poverty! I may be returning to Kenya in September to do some adult education. So many of these grandmothers are illiterate, not even able to write their own names. I'm living a happy and satisfying life.

My dog Tucker!!
Mary teaching the young ladies in a village in Malawi, Africa to make washable menstrual pads. The plan is that they will go to school during their periods if they have reliable protection.
More teaching. I even needed to teach them how to hold scissors correctly.
Staff member, Cathy, teaching the girls that they are precious, made in the image of God. Therefore, they should keep their bodies pure until marriage.
One of the Christian preschools which our organization, GoGo Grandmothers, has built, staffed, and provided materials for in Malawi, Africa.
Another preschool we Gogos provide. "Gogo" is the word for grandparent in the Malawian language.
Spreading the love of Jesus to the poorest of the poor.
Always a teacher, I found the little girl in the middle, Virginia, to be the most likely to succeed in this class.
Learning "2." English is the national language in Malawi.
I hate Halloween!! Monster Tucker!
Ok, when do I get to start barking at the trick or treaters!?
No, really! Is this necessary?
