Mary's Story
I attended Fourteen Holy Martyr Catholic School in Bklyn. thru Grade 2 where I received my 1st Holy Communion. We moved to Ozone Park, 104th St. & 97th Ave. where I attended St. Mary Gate of Heaven School, Ozone Park, Grade 3-8.
While growing up my best neighborhood friends were the Lamonica & Squillante families who lived across the street from us. IIn July 2011 I re-connected with the Lamonica Family & visited them in Fl. Had a fun time talking about when we were kids in Ozone Park, SMGH, the Athletic Assoc. My mom was a volunteer for the S.M.G.H. Athletic Assoc. & gave her time generously by working in the school gym kitchen along with others.
My dad was very involved in the Catholic War Veterans Post 1721 in Ozone Park. He was considered to be their historian as he was always taking photos of their events. I think that particular gene was passed on to myself and my children as we are all very interested in photography.
We moved, a few blocks away, 103rd St. between 97th & 95th ave. when the owner of the house had sold. Luckily for me I was able to remain fri...Expand for more
ends with our old neighbors and gained new friends on our new block.
After graduating S.M.G.H. I attended Richmond Hill H.S. thru graduation in 1968. During my high school years my family continued to volunteer in both S.M.G.H. and neighborhood events. I met my husband while volunteering at SMGH during a basketball tournament where he was coaching. I later found out, thru mutual friends, that Frank had just begun to teach at SMGH 1969, however, he had been a team mgr. for baseball & basketball the sports program for several yrs. We began dating and got married in 1973.
We moved to Howard beach where we still live. Happily married, 38yrs., and have two married children, Annemarie & Michael, & three grandsons, Nicholas, Gregory, & Anthony. # 4 is on the way. My husband and I have followed in our parents footsteps by continuing to volunteer with community groups. We continue to volunteer at S.M.G.H., our local public schools, civic organizations, just to name a few. Just attended the S.M.G.H. school show, Aladdin, & it was even better than the first show 40 yrs. ago.
