Mary's Story
Perhaps, the other students in "Class of 70' at Suitland didn't know or notice something about me. I was pregnant the last 4 or 5 months of my Senior Year. Back then, no one talked about that stuff. Being from a "good Catholic"family I certaintly was not suppose to know anything about sex, (actually, I didn't). The child was put up for adoption. He went to a nice, stable home. Through sources, I know he is ok with a family and several children.
Interestingly enough; in the Class of 1971, the first person walking up to pick up her diploma was pregnant. One difference is that she got married to the father. Anyway, life is funny, huh??
After High School: Well, I delivered Oct 13. By Nov 1, I was working for the US government in downtown DC. The Bldg/Dept. has changed names since. It was on E St, NW; a couple of block up from Constitution. (I can see it in my mind's eye; but the name escapes me). I took a bus from District Heights,at first. Eventually got into a carpool. I do remember going down 19& Constitution to head out to DH.
Jan 9, 1971 I was in a auto accident. It put me in the hospital(Andrews Air Force Base) for months. I broke my right femur; hip; some ribs; plus some internal bleeding. The leg healed in traction. I got out of the hospital in time for Memorial Day weekend. Worked downtown for a few more months then transferred to the Census Bureau in Suitland, MD.
After this, things get a litttle foggy. When I turned 21(Jan 1973) I started drinking. I waited til I was 21; because that was the drinking age at the time. I drank like I was making up for lost time. So withing 6 months of my 21st birthday; I was drinking in the mornings; &having blackouts. Eventually quit working for the Census Bureau(before they fired me, really). TESST school was my next stop(1974-76). It's a electronic/elec./TV/Digital trade school in Hyattsville, Md. It still exists, just in different locations. Between drugs &drinking I still somehow managed to get a few semesters under my belt.
The military seemed like a good next step for me. So, there I go....joined the Navy(Dec. 1976). It was called 'delayed entry'. Being signed up before 1977 I was entitled to the old GI Bill. I started boot...Expand for more
camp in May 1976. I went through wiithdrawal in bootcamp; not realizing it at the time. If ever there is a place to drink &drink cheaply &easily; it's the Navy. My last duty was on the USS Vulcan as an ET. It was the first ship to have women permanently assigned(sea-going, that is). We were in the news; made history, etc. After 2 years &10 months and some mischief I was kicked out of the Navy. I received a 'General under Honorable conditions' discharge. That means I can't join the CIA.
I was actually fortunate to 'get caught'/into trouble in the NAVY. I was given the opportunity of rehab. I was introduced to AA. Therefore, upon discharge I knew there was help for me.
August 1, 1980 last drink. Applied for employment at Washington Metropolital Area Transit Authority(WMATA). Affectionately know as "Metro" in the DC Area. I worked there for 27 years. One qualifies for full retirement after a straight 27 years and/or if your age &years of service equal 83. For me that was enough. At the exact date I was eligible, I retired.
I layed around, hung around; messed around for a bit. Now, in the process of learning; relearning; unlearning. Opening up to new possibilities. Ready, willing &able to take steps/actions toward the rest of my exciting life. I'm creating a whole new/different carrer path. All work is honorable(didn't Kung Fu say that); right??
Checking out organic gardening/farming. Learning EMF Balancing Technique. Interested in Shamanism.
There are numerous juicy stories; antidotes; a couple of husbands; no children; etc. stuck in and around all the aforementioned.
For entertainment value, I may update this story at another time. Thanks for now.
OK, here's one: once, in the early 70's I got high with a famous(TV Celeb.)person's kid. Probably can't say who he is.....So, so, this story stinks. O, well.....
I was on cruches most of the summer of 1971(after car accident); I saw Carlos Santana at the Alexandria Roller Rink. Remember those days??!!
I hitchhiked downtown for the 4th of July fireworks. I got very good on those crutches. Even rode with my brother on his motorcycle w/crutches laid across the seat. "Youth is wasted on the young" as Oscar Wilde so eloquently put it.
