Mary Jane's Story

I've been baking cakes, pies, and pastries for as long as I can remember, but the art of cake decorating has been my passion since about the age of 15. My Dad bought a novice cake decorating set for me, and I started in with baking and decorating a surprise birthday cake for my sister. All said and done, the cake went down in family history as the "mess" that started a career! After high school, I kept up my passion of sugar art by training as a baker's apprentice at the White Fence Farm restaurant in Denver (formerly Wilson's Restaurant.) From there, I worked various odd jobs (some of which were in the baking industry in Denver.) Finally, after a few years of looking intently for a more promising position and not finding anything in the Denver area, I decided to move to Las Vegas, and try my "luck" at working in an upscale bakery there. I worked for several years in Vegas, then moved to Texas, where I thought I might "strike it rich" someday. Well, that "someday" came just a couple of years ago when we received a phone call from a special client! The "special client" turned out to be Miss Jenna Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush! We were honored to have been chosen to make her wedding cake in May of 2008. It was a thrilling experience to be part of the Mr. and Mrs. Hager's special event, and even ...Expand for more
more so when we were treated to a special meeting and photo with the President! We're grateful to have had this rare opportunity to share a moment of our country's history. The story of how this special cake order came about was written by former presidential advisor, historian, and author, Mr. Doug Wead. We're extremely thankful to Mr. Wead for his writing talent, and to Mr. and Mrs. Hager for choosing Texas vendors (including us) for their wedding, and especially to President and Mrs. Bush for their kindness. My husband and I are also thankful for our family and friends who've helped us along the way to fulfilling our dreams. I enjoy the opportunity to share in customers' special moments through the artistry of cake design; nothing is sweeter than seeing the joy on their faces when I bring out a piece of tasty artwork! Baking and decorating cakes has taken it's toll on my hands, though. I had to have surgery on both hands in June of this year, which kept me from my work for quite some time. I'm sorry to say, but due to the seriousness of the surgery and the length of time it's taken to recouperate, I've had to curtail my beloved passion of decorating cakes. I hope to someday be able to pick up where I left off, because "You can take the girl away from the bakery, but you can't take the bakery away from the girl!"
