Mary's Story

Life My life...boy is that alot to ask. I am married for 26 years to Jesse. We have two children. Hannah, 20, is a college student. She is working on a degree in Multimedia Graphic Design. Our other daughter is Sarah, 17. She is still in high school. Both our children have serious medical problems. Hannah was born with Aortic Stenosis and has had an Aortic Root Replacement. Sarah developed intracted epilepsy when she was 8 months old which required a Left Temporal Lobectomy in order to stop her from seizing 6 times a day. She has many other medical problems and Texas Children's Hospital and our family are on a first name basis. Although I can no longer work (I am 100% service connected disabled) I am trying to write a book. The optimal word here is trying. My life is not dull. We live in Houston, Texas. My husband is a Secondary Education Teacher (History and Geography). We have ..(are you ready and no we are not insane..) 16 cats and 6 dogs. They are in order CATS- Pretty Girl, Nuisance, Tabitha, Sir Turkalot, Angel, Cuddles, Streak, Gabriel, Xena, Bullseye, Braveheart, Goldenstar, Isabel, Galahad, Gwenieviere and Salem II. Now Tabitha is the mother of Angel, Cuddles, Streak, Gabriel, Xena, Bullseye and Braveheart. She got out before we had her spayed and she mated with Socks and had Angel, Cuddles, Streak and Salem I. (Salem I died when she was a month old). Then three days before we could get the boys neutered she went into heat. She locked her up but not fast enough. Sir Turkalot is the father of Bullseye, Cuddles is the father of Xena and Braveheart and Angel is the father of Gabriel and another cat that died of FeLV Tigger. Goldenstar and Isabel were strayed that Hannah and Sarah "rescued". then came the day I was called out the lawn to find two 10 day old kittens....abandened by their mother (actually the neighbors kids took them and then the mother could not find them). With eyes closed and weighing 4 ouces we started on the every 2 hour around the clock feeding of two babies...so entered Galahad and Gwenieviere. Finally there is Salem II, he was brought to the house by Hannah's fiance with the statement but they were going to put him to sleep. This is how you get 16 cats....and no brains.....Then dogs are a whole other story.....There is Brandy, Midnight, Missy, Bear, Turner and Cookie. Brandy was the first dog. She appeared on the scene when there was only Pretty Girl and Nuisance. My husband brought her home after the store threatened to have her shot because she would run in the store and "acquire" packages of meat...pretty smart stray dog. She is a German Shephard and beautiful but big. The cats were not happy to see her come through the door. One went one direction and the other went the other direction. Midnight was a gift to my daughter from a friend. She was spoiled from day one and she loves cats and is loved by the cats. Missy and Bear are the children of Cookie and Turner. Cookie and Turner were the neighborhood strays that everyone fed and took care of. These dogs would watch the kids in the neighborhood and walk them to the bus wait with them to get on the bus and then go about their business. Well one day Harris County Animal Control decided that the...Expand for more
y wanted Cookie and Turner and they wanted me to get them for them. I said no. Six tickets later I has myself 2 dogs more. They have become house dogs. Except to get to the bathroom they do not like leaving the house. The cats love them and think they have their own cuddle station. Missy and Bear aretwo of their six puppies. We had homes for them but they did not work out so we ended up keeping them and they are so sweet and such great watchdogs...It just two dogs more. Anyway other then church and family that is my crazy life. I have however put a sign on my door to all cats and dogs in the neighborhood. No Vacany however we will fed if hungry. School Since I went to an all girls high school my biggest crush was on a teacher. It did not last long but I believe I had lots of company. Although being young has it's advantages I would not want to go through the "growing pains". Maturity has its advantages and insight is only one of them. One of the craziest school memories...holding the record in gym make up in order to graduate. Who knew you had to pass gym to graduate. I believe I was the most physically fit graduate on stage of the Academy of Music that year. College After the Army and when my husband was discharged from the Navy we settled in King of Prussia and I attended Nursing School. I recieved my ADN with a grade point aveage of 3.98. I got a B in my Music Elective (guess what my Professor was a graduate of Girls High) I guess she expected alot more out of me than the others in my class. It brought down my grade point but I enjoyed working with someone from GHS and Treble Clef again. Workplace I worked for 7 years as a RN until I became ill and while driving to work one day I was in an MVA after suffering a seizure. Since I was already injuried while in the military and I crushed my ankle I was permanently disabled and rated 100% service connected disabled by the VA. I miss being a nurse but I have adjusted to what God has handed me. There is a reason for everything in this life even though we do not understand it. Military I joined the Army at the age of 28 after a bad marriage. I was the oldest recruit in my boot camp company (3 platoons of males and 1 platoon of females). I though I was going to die the first four weeks in basic training but despite being injuried early in training I managed to finish. I learned so much about myself and about other people. It is easy for some people to quit and jump into the back of a truck for the long ride back to camp but when you discover the spark inside yourself that will not let you quit no matter how mch you hurt. I graduated from basic training, went to AIT at Fort Sam Houston and graduated as Distinguished Honor Graduate of 91Q School (Pharmacy School) after having completed 91B School (Combat Medic School). Assigned to Brooke Army at Fort Sam for 18 months then 3 years in Germany then another 2 and 1/2 years at Brooke Army. So many things occur when you are in the military but unless you have been there it is diffuicult to explain. I guess the best way to explain it is that in the military you are a team and a family. It is a difficult life yet a life full of friends and a sense of meaning.
