Mary's Story

Mary is from New York, New York. She is married to Joseph Skeffington who hails from Northern Ireland. Her schools include Our Lady of Wisdom Academy. She graduated from St. John's University in New York where she majored in Medical Technology. After working in that field, she attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where she obtained her Ph. D. in Psychology. As of May 27, 2022, Mary Elizabeth retired from her 13-year stint at the Police & Fire Clinic located in Washington, DC. She noted it was a bitter-sweet moment but a necessary move. . One of Mary's favorite quotes is:"Onward and Upward". One accomplishment of which she is very proud is writing a book - Seasoned with Sage Savoring Life's Wisdom - on Amazon.com. A good read for those entering into/already in the later years of life. My other accomplishment - or ongoing task is to write a spirituality column for the OLWA Newsletter. I am interested in incorporating the names and activities of our alums - as they apply to whatever topic is up for discussion. Currently working on the November 2016 Newsletter - the theme is Remembering Old Friends - or perhaps - Friends of Long-Standing! I would ask as many women as possible to make a contribution to the Newslette...Expand for more
r - bring us up to date on what you are doing - or perhaps what you did in your post-OLWA years. As you recall the Newsletter will be published only once/year - so this is your chance for 2016! I also love to garden - although we have only a small city plot of land - I must say thanks to a good supply of spring rain we have had a great display of daffodils, and tulips. currently we have irises in bloom and this year we were blessed with an abundance of April roses - usually we have to wait until Mother's Day for the first blooms to show. Eagerly awaiting the arrival of day lilies, Madonna lilies, and larkspur - also ornamental alliums - spring in DC is beautiful! . One sad note - today (5/05/16) our Bradford Pear had to come down - some sort of leaf blight got it - and there is no cure for it. This will leave a "hole " in our space but there is a small apricot tree that has been growing behind it so perhaps, with improved sunlight, that will develop and fill in - although it will never attain the height of a Bradford. Still working at the Police and Fire Clinic here in DC - Hope all is well with you - and please remember to send me any info you might wish to include in upcoming OLWA Newsletters - especially the spirituality column.
