Mary's Story
Workplace:
Since 1984 I have been working for the Department of Defense in the field of contracting. In 1995 I transferred from my job as Contracting Officer in Irvine to my home state, Michigan. Two years later I was promoted and assigned to an office in Wiesbaden, Germany where I worked for three years as the Business Advisor to the Commander of the Defense Contract Management Agency for Southern Europe. Upon my return to Michigan, I was appointed Contracts Subject Matter Expert for offices located in Michigan, Northern Ohio and Indiana.
Since 2005 I have been a Contract Operations Team Leader andI still travel a lot but to such exotic places as Detroit, Ft. Wayne, and Toledo, rather than Turkey, Israel, Spain, and Italy. My youthful desire to travel has been more than satisfied. Now I welcome "at home" time and look forward to retirement.
Life After Hours:
Coming home after work is like going on vacation. I have a house overlooking a lake on one side and a turn-of-the-century Inn on the other. In the summer I relax on the deck listening to live music without paying a cover charge or I can take a swim in the lake. The winter is a different story but I love ...Expand for more
the seasonal changes and can find something wonderful in each.
In recent years Kayaking has become my passion and I take every opportunity to "hit the river" or the lake. I am blessed with the ability to take a 5 hour drive and see my father who also came "home" to Michigan. Over the 4th of July (2010) weekend I attended a Ledy Family Reunion on Drummond Island. Dad and his 4 siblings (age 84 - 92) all live there within a 2 mile radius of each other. We marched in the "big parade"...each branch of the Ledy family wore a different colored tee shirt to identify our Ledy parent. My son, Ben, noted that from space it must have looked like a giant bag of Skittles had exploded. There was nearly 150 of us...five generations.
I don't feel any older than I was when I attended El Modena...although my body often reminds me that I am, indeed, older. I am blessed with a wonderful family, a good job, a nice place to live, and great memories. I am prone to nostalgia and think often of high school and how great it was to be among the 'founders' of a new school. Occasionally I hear from friends from those good times and even from some I knew here in Michigan. Life is Good!
