Mary's Story
Mary is from Emmett, Idaho. Mary works(ed) at The Idaho Foodbank, Family Advocate Program, Ada County Juvenile Court.
One of Mary's favorite quotes is:"WHEN you are old and gray and full of sleep
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true;
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face.
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead,
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
".
More about Mary:"I grew up in Port Townsend, Washington. Growing up, I thought everyone lived near a beach and could hear foghorns on winter mornings. I went to the same school for all 12 years of my public education - I still dream about classmates and I'm so startled to see photographs of them today and discover that they got old, just like me.
I married my highschool sweetheart and we had three girls - Katie, Meg, and Bridget. They are my crowning glory. Gary and I divorced after 24...Expand for more
years of marriage, but he will always be my oldest friend.
I moved to Boise, Idaho, in 1989 and made a home there. I married Richard Porterfield in 1992. The marriage wasn't forever, but he is my second oldest friend.
Today I live in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, with my daughter Meg and her little son, Declan John, who is 19 months old. We are busy discovering a beautiful country that is like Idaho in many ways. I've gotten a lot of pleasure walking through the neighborhood of Won Jung Ri, where we live, admiring the beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.
I still work. I have four client-agencies in southwest Idaho and I write proposals for funding for them with my friend, Chris Jones, who lives in Boise. We collaborate via email and computer telephone. What an age we live in!
Mostly, I look after Meg and her darling boy. In a few weeks, I'll head for Eagle River, Alaska, to take care of Katie's little lad, Ben, as she has her second son, Tom.
In August, Bridget, my youngest daughter plans to move to Singapore. It will be nice to have her closer. We plan to spend the holidays together - Thanksgiving in Singapore and Christmas in Won Jung Ri.
Life is good. In fact, it is a miracle.".
