Mary's Story

Hi Group, Definitely time to update my profile. I am back living in Vancouver. I had been living in Mexico for 6 years and loved it. I lived first in Puerto Vallarta for almost 4 years. I had a great apartment right on the beach and used to love sitting on my balcony watching the boats. The Pirate ship would sail by every night, and as part of the on board entertainment, fireworks were set off....every night. It was always fun to watch . I had a lot of friends there and it was difficult to leave but I wanted to see more of and live in other parts of Mexico. So I moved to Tepoztlan. It is a small town in the interior of Mexico about an hour and a half drive south of Mexico City. Very Mexican where it is rare to hear English spoken. I loved to walk into town and go shopping in the "Mercado", the town market where you could buy meat, veggies, fruit, flowers...all fresh. And fresh tortillas ... always fresh tortillas. Tepoztlan is a fascinating place. It's very picturesque and is surrounded by some amazing mountains that look as if they have been ripped from a Chinese landscape. Tepoztlan is called the Magic City or Healing City because of the healing powers of the surrounding mountains. There is a temple up in the mountains where Tepoztecatl, patron god of the Tepoztlan Valley was born. I am told there are witches here , in Spanish the word is "brujos". The area is also well known for the frequency of UFO sightings. Flashing lights & UFO's are seen above the mountains and almost every long term resident has a story about them....Expand for more
Lava rock has been extensively throughout the city. It is used for all the high walls that surround almost every home, and the roads themselves. Needless to say, my lovely convertible which rides a bit low, suffered a lot. Those roads are terrible for your car. In May 2011, I moved to the Yucatan. I lived by the ocean in a gorgeous town just south of Playa Del Carmen called Akumal. It was sooooo much hotter there than the west coast. But the water! It's turquoise blue and crystal clear and so gorgeous. I finally went snorkelling after being afraid of it all my life. It was great! The second longest barrier reef follows the coastline here. The variety of fish is amazing. I loved it. Now, as far as my life before Mexico. I retired in 2003 after 31 years as a flight attendant with Air Canada. I really loved my job. I have travelled a fair bit of the world with Air Canada and would not have changed a thing. I have 2 daughters, 31 and 26 who I love so very much. My daughter Ashley is an actress and lives with her husband in Toronto where she has just graduated with a Master in Information. Can't wait for her convocation in June. Caitlin is an artist, a graduate of OCAD (Ontario School of Art and Design) in Toronto. She is now working as a graphic designer with a small company and pursuing her art on the side. The big change in my life, is that my husband and I have reunited after almost 9 years apart. And we are so much better second time around. Life is good. I have no complaints. Hope all is well with you, keep safe, Mary
