Mary Elaine's Story

A little horror story about one of my hitching experiences. While on California/Nevada border. A panel truck was picking up hitchers along the highway and dropped off at the end of town near a couple of routes headed toward interstate hwys. People headed in different directions. My friend and I apparently went the wrong way. Before we knew it we were in Death Valley. We were headed too Tonopah, Nv. After hours on the hwy. without a ride. No water, in the middle of the day. We saw no signs of life. Just sand, mountains, rocks, sage brush and asphalt for miles. Every so often a car would wiz by us. We would give them the universal sign of "thanks"... Finally, right when the sun began to drift down below the horizon behind us, two angels who happened to be indians picked us up. We very appreciatively climbed into the back of the sedan which had no seats. We both sat on the hot metal, still feeling thankful not having to be on our feet for awhile. They also had a couple cases of hot PBR. We sipped them at first but were overcome with thirst. We continued east, now with a wind blowing on our skin cooling us off. I was thankful to God he sent his angels. We rode a good 100 miles with them. We were let out about 20 miles from our destination. We walked a couple miles and a middle aged man picked us up in his pickup, with air conditioning. He wanted to know all about us and why were out in the middle on nowhere especially a young girl as myself. He reminded us how lucky we were and I reassured him I knew we were saved by God. We reached Tonapah, and the kindly man pointed us to a hotel to recover from our plight. Our salavation didn't end there. We didn't have the money for a room. We could however have free drinks and smokes. I was sitting in the lobby. I must have looked a fright, two truckers came out of the elevator, took one look at me then approached asking if I could use some help. I replied that I just needed to rest awhile. They were two more angels. They handed me their room key telling me to go on up to the room, bathe, lay down and sleep awhile. They would book it for another night, no strings. I couldn't thank them enough telling them they were guardian angels. I found my friend at a card table and told him about the kind truckers. We went up to the room, walking in, I just collapsed on the bed and fell into a deep and restful slumber. Upon awaking af...Expand for more
ter a few hours, I went into the bathroom to run a bath. I looked in the mirror for the first time and saw how swollen and blistered my face and lips were. I didn't feel any pain my body was to stressed I guess. I soaked in the bath for a very long time while I kept applying a cool washcloth over my face. By the next morning my face had lost most of the swelling had gone down. My friend contacted his relatives as to our location and we were picked up. We survived a day in "The Valley of the shadow of Death". We were never alone. Praise God Almighty!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My freshman year I was quiet and reserved, stayed to myself plus quite self-conscience about my asthmatic cough. My sophmore year was quite different. Talk about being ridiculed by the teachers and staff, which I was. I wasn't allowed to be a kiltie because I was 1/4 inch to short. Geesh! You could usually find me hanging out in Mrs. Scotts art class, she knew me for who I really was. After all my Senior friends graduated, I was left to go it alone against the establishment. Just for a short time though. I had 2 baby sisters to take care of while my mom worked, so when I turned 16 I gleefully checked out. After the girls started school, I began a life of a little traveling adventure. Hitching around the USA, never alone mind you, always with a friend. Best to have a buddy. After that I tried to settle down, get a job, my own place and live my life. That only lasted a little while too, guess you could say I had some gypsy in me. I drove all night to meet up with my cuz in Louisiana, them arkansas mountains sure are dark and winding at night. I kept repeating "God, just get me there." I came to La. in 1981 May, arriving just in time for contraband days. After that, I had to stick around awhile. I found a job making good money at a lounge bartending. In July of 81 I met The man who would become my husband. We got engaged on my birthday Aug.8th 81. Married on Nov. 7th of 81. He was able to do what no other man could do, tame the tiger in me, albeit, it was hard...lol 27 years later we are still holding on strong. Now, were are growing old together.
