Mary's Story

Let's see...Left SoCal in '79 to finish high school in Wash. state & work for my brother...Returned to Artesia in SoCal with parents in '82...Married...Divorced...Moved with parents to Lake Elsinore in SoCal '87...Married...Separated (15 years!)...No kids...Left workforce due to my own health issues, Sept. '05 & became caregiver for my parents in 2005...Dad died May '07 after 3 mos on hospice, Mom was totally bedridden & on oxygen 24/7 due to heart failure & double pneumnia complicated by spinal fractures. After 3 1/2 yrs on hospice, Mom died peacefully at home with 3 of her 4 children with her. I'm now working on learning who I am. I didn't get out much the past five years. I have 16 nieces & nephews. One is a nun at Mt St Michael's Novitiate in Spokane, seven are married, one divorced, one engaged and have given me 17 greats & one more on the way. I've always been able to borrow a kid whenever I wanted one! Favorite occupation of numerous held since age 15? Candy making & sales!! Almost 10 years, really loved it. Just call me the CRML QEN (caramel queen ;) ). UPDATE: Mom died on August 1 here at home leaving me to discover, mid-life, my new self... "I don't know, when you look on your life don't you, what do you think about your life? I think I've had a good life - I haven't had everything but I don't think anybody else has. I've had my share of sorrow & sickness & so have other people...but you know the good...that's what life is, a mosaic of lights & darks & grays, & you go through one phase & come into another...:" - Dorothy Meyers to Robert Meyers approx 1986 Dorothy Margaret Meyers peacefully drew her last breath at the Sun City home she shared with her youngest child, Mary Warren in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 1, 2010 while surrounded by three of her four children & the recorded sounds of her happy self & family from over 40 years ago. Dorothy was born the first child of Josephine F. Nicolette Harrison & John J. Harrison on September 5, 1925 in San Francisco, California. Dorothy's youth found her bedbound long term on two separate occasions, first by infantile paralysis (approx age 6), then by pernicious anemia (approx age 12) . It was while bedbound that Dorothy discovered her artistic talents. She was further encouraged by her parents who enrolled her in a home-study art instruction course. During high school Dorothy was invited ...Expand for more
to join an exclusive art society, the first of many such affiliations. In the mid-1940's Dorothy went to a photography studio for a portrait as a gift to her parents. In chatting with the photographer it was decided she should bring him some of her work. He hired her to drape & pose clients but most importantly, he trained her in tinting photographs - from barely a hint of color to a full heavy oil painting directly on the photographic print. Dorothy's talent, skill & delicate touch made her ideally suited. Dorothy continued to add color to a black and white world in this way for over five decades. From high school graduates, to brides to precious keepsakes of loved ones as well as landscapes & still lifes, her work graces homes & businesses throughout the United States. Dorothy also exhibited skill in sketching, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, reverse glass painting, oils...and received a number of awards & touching notes of appreciation over the years. Dorothy drew her last sketches just this past February, simple landscapes from her imagination. On November 16, 1947, Dorothy married John W. Meyers of Oakland. Together they had four children & throughout various organizations, particularly the Pro-Life Movement, touched countless other lives. John passed in May of 2007, just six months before their 60th wedding anniversary. After living in the Northern California, Washington state & Los Angeles county areas, the Meyers settled on The Farm in Wildomar in 1987. In November of 2002 they came to the Sun City Villas. By then, Dorothy was housebound. In September, 2006, Dorothy became bedbound once again after suffering spinal fractures due to a fall. By December, 2006 a heart failure diagnosis brought Ramona VNA & Hospice of Hemet into her life. After three months, the end of February, 2007 found John & Dorothy both on Hospice home care. The world now came to Dorothy's bedside yet she continued to touch lives & spread joy & beauty. Few visitors ever left her without a smile. Dorothy is survived by her four children: Theresa (& George) Sullivan of Spokane, WA; Robert (& Sandy Stirling) Meyers of Bryan, TX; Kathy (& Bob) Trujillo of Orange, CA and Mary Warren of Sun City, CA; 16 grandchildren & 17 great-grandchildren. If you wish to honor Dorothy, donations may be made in her name to Pro-Life organizations or to Ramona VNA & Hospice of Hemet, California.
