Mary's Story

Life It's been an interesting ride. Iowa to Virginia, to Florida, to California, to Nevada to Mexico. Chunks of my heart are in each place I've been lucky enough to call home and we were lucky to have friends all over the country. Career-wise, spent several years in corporate p.r. for a utility, then Mike, my hubby (a Pensacola, Fl boy) who was a journalist, editor, and writer, transferred to Monterey County, California and I had to regroup. Went to work for Monterey County for 5 years as an analyst...then Mike transferred to Reno with Gannett in 1985 and I worked for Washoe County and the City of Reno as an analyst, public affairs director and community relations director before retiring in 2002. While doing budgets, news media, community services, etc., I took a stab at lobbying for local government at the state legislature, got kinda good at it and became a contract lobbyist representing various jurisdictions around the state at the legislature before, during and after I retired from the City of Reno. Never could get away from politics! Mike retired from Gannett in 2001, and went to work for a congressman from Reno. He transferred to Jim's Las Vegas office in 2002, and I moved down after the legislative session. Mike retired again from the Feds when his boss was elected governor, choosing not to join state government. I hung up my lobbying spurs a few years back and we both retired to Baja, Mexico out of Las Vegas. Great career life, lots of stress however, and I don't miss being boss. two of us and a couple of cock-a-poos and a beta fish. We loved our home in Las Vegas...16 palm trees, just like the ones I grew up with on Summit Lake. Yeh, right. But we decided to retire in Baja, Mexico with a much better cost of living and a terrific view of the Bay and the Pacific. After nearly 25 years in the desert, the ocean beckoned and we dumped the house, furniture, etc., and headed south. We were in Mexico 6 years until Mike passed away peacefully at home a couple of weeks after our 40th anniversary in Mqarch 2016. How I miss my guy. I will stay in Mexico after a two month trip to the US to take his ashes back to Pensacola, Florida.. Nothing left of either of our families. My best bud is an Iowegian I met in Florida in 1972 who still lives in Pensacola. She's from the north country...Dubuque. I'm planning on publishing a book of short stories and a novel Mike wrote and I'm in the middle of my third novel based primarily in Iowa... Des Moines and Clarke County. I plan to publish my books when I get Mike's into print. Mike was a fine writer and journalist, I'm more of a hack but love the process of writing my trilogy.. The loss of my darlin' has certainly altered my life as you can imagine. He was my best friend and the love of my life. But there are many good memories to sustain me. We had a life for sure. Spare time is spent writing, golfing, walking, sitting on the porch looking at the bay, sipping a margarita or cold brew, or pondering the meaning of dog. Take care all and love each other. Mary H
