Mary's Story

Updated April, 2011: After graduation from JD, I worked in Houston for seven years before I married in 1971 and moved to Victoria, TX. Both of my children were born in Victoria and I went to work for DuPont. After my divorce, I remained in Victoria until I retired in June, 2003 with 30 yrs of service to DuPont. By then my two children were grown and had left the nest. I sold my home and moved to the San Diego,CA area for almost two years and lived with my sister, Rose Tobias Elrod, JD CL '62. Her husband passed in December, 2004 and in April, 2005, we came home to Texas, bought a home in Atascocita, East of Humble, where we are enjoying our retirement. We are both very involved in two non-profit JD alumni organizations that keep us busy; the Jeff Davis Hispanic Alumni Association and the Jeff Davis Alumni & Friends. The JDHAA was started in 1987; we are a non-profiit organization; all volunteer membership; and raise funds for scholarships awarded to graduating JD seniors every May. I became active in the JDHAA in 2005 when I moved back to the Houston area. JDHAA's main source of revenue comes from donations from corporations, an annual Scholarship Gala in October, and donations from JD Alumni who support our goals. Because of the present day economy, corporate donations aren't what they used to be so recently, we have started sponsoring one-day bus trips to Coushatta Casino in Kinder, LA. LOTS OF FUN!! We are ALWAYS looking for new members and offer three different categories of memberships. Send me an ...Expand for more
email for more information. The second alumni organization I am active in is the Jeff Davis Alumni & Friends. The JDAF is also a non-profit group with an all-volunteer membership and we sponsor the annual Slater Martin Golf Tournamnet in early October of every year. Money raised from the golf tournament supports the different JD organizations and their projects. In the past we have helped purchase athletic equipment; band uniforms; t-shirts for various events; helped pay for bus transportation to get students to games, assisted the Pantheretts officers attend training camps; helped purchase the school's Panther tunnel; and too many more to go on. The tournament is named after Slater Martin, JD CL 1943, who is is in the NBA Hall of Fame. He was a star basketball player at JD and took the school to State; star basketball at UT in Austin; and then played on two different professional basketball teams. Google SLATER MARTIN and read about his many achievements in the basketball world. Our golf tournament is open to anyone who would like to join us; you do not need to be a JD grad. Please send me an email if you would like any more information. I'm also involved in the 1964 Reunion Committee and we are already planning our 50th Reunion for 2014. The committee is headed by Arnaldo Hinojosa and 16 other '64 Grads. We have a website but classmates.com does not allow me to enter website addresses. So send me an email and I'll reply with the information. Well, I guess I've said enough. Thanks for stopping by. Mary
