Mary's Story
Raised two daughters with my husband, living in Western, MA for most of that time. Worked in fitness for a few years, including work at a "world class" health resort in the Berkshires. That got unfulfilling, despite access to the luxurious workout equipment and spaces, so I moved on to my original intended field, teaching. Beginning with teaching wonderful adults from other countries to speak English more fluently (reminded me that I knew an English learner in Somerville High -- a nice guy). After several years, I went on to work in Special Education. Currently working in a substantially separate classroom with some great students. It's challenging, but every day has some fun and enjoyment.
I love drawing, painting, and taking walks (which comes in handy when I travel), all activities I loved when I was in high school. One friend and I would take such long walks sometimes that we would fee like we'd never make it to our respective homes.
I've done some traveling in Europe and have made extended visits to Egypt, where one of my daughters lived for over ten years. When I travel, I like to do so on my own, or rather, with my family, rather than with groups, so we can do what...Expand for more
we want, and we've gotten to do quite a bit, since we like planning our travel. Our only error was when my daughter and I arrived a day late to our hotel on Lake Como a few years ago, but it turned out okay, because we got our room anyway. I wanted to see it because of the movie "A Month by the Lake". Loved loved loved it! For adventure, I'd put Marsa Matruh, on the north coast of Egypt at or near the top. The hotel had a HUGE (unsettling) two-story-high picture of M. Quadaffi hanging in the center arrival/reception area. It's a working-class town for summer vacations and travel to places such as Aguiba, done "native-style" is in the back of a Toyota pickup with boards for seats in the bed of the truck. I had nearly nodded off when a man got in next to me and something wooden and feathery touched my leg -- a cage with a couple of live chickens in it. That was years before the incidents of bird flu. Aguiba was stunning, a beach at the foot of high chalky cliffs, rimming part of the turquoise Mediterranean.
For now, most of my time is spent being sure my lessons line up with student needs and the curriculum frameworks. Thank goodness for vacation! Some things never change!
