Merry's Story
Life
I have been married & divorced. I have 1 child a son named Tony. He is married & has 2 daughters, Rebecca & Serenity. Tony has the same bone disease I have (Osteogenesis Imperfecta). We now know he has passed the illness to his daughters. There was a movie made about our disease starring Samuel L. Jackson & Bruce Willis called UNBREAKABLE. The Discovery Health Channel often shows a program called Children of Glass, which is about the worse form of our disease. Most people with this disease die in their late 30's or early 40's. So I have beat the odds so far.
I was a nurse for 18 years until I had to retire in July of 1999 related to my bone disease. We lived mostly in Denver until we moved to Texas in 2000 for the warmer climate in hopes it would help with my pain. I have a friend here who I was friends with before my family moved to Colorado in February 1972. I am mostestly wheelchair confined & have to have a personal care attendent with me at most times. I spend most days at Dr. appointments or medical related appointments. I usually spend my time laying in bed (to help with my pain) reading...Expand for more
. I can no longer make meals or clean house. I have not been allowed to drive since before our move. It has gotten to the point that I have to have someone else set-up my medications related to the side effects of many of my meds (15 a day).
I reconnected with my high school sweetheart through this site. He has moved down here to be with me. We were kept apart by our families & circumstances for over 24 years. So now that we have reconnected we are making up for time lost. We were very fortunate this summer to have my younger sister fly us over to England & Scotland. It was something I had never thought to have a chance to do. The trip was so very amazing. Getting to see places that have been there for centuries. The woodworking, the tapistries & above all the architecture & histories. As a special night for us, on his birthday, we slept in a castle. A true castle! It was built the same year as Balmoire, & the lady that runs the place grew up in that castle. She said her mom had bought it over 75 years ago. The castle was named Black Craig. The only down side to the trip were the bombings in London.
