Mary's Story
Life
It's been real! fascinating! exciting-boring-depressing! It's been life. And it's been entirely different than I would have ever expected growing up in Midland -- experiencing Sugnet/Northeast/Midland High. I'm betting others say the same thing today.
My children remain my major contribution to a world that greatly needs young people like them -- Kellie, a computer programmer/engineer working in medical tech & brain implant devices; Greg, the best middle school teacher children in Bloomington, MN will ever find; and my daughter-in-law, Paula, is the most committed counselor students can have.
The Forest Service was my life for over 30 years -- in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arkansas, and the Washington, DC Metro area since 1992. In 2005 I began work with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and retired in June of this year (2009). My experience as a LEGIS Fellow with the Brookings Institution in 1998 was another mind expanding adventure. I worked as Personal Staff for now Senator Debbie Stabenow -- yessssss.

s in me since High School include a kind of irritated awareness that I just plain failed to ask enough questions about so many things -- that I/we took so very many things about life/living for granted. It really comes home to me when I visit The Wall -- and find our Class President's name (Alan Groom). The responsibility (with a capital R) for sheer living that has grown in me seems to know no bounds. In retirement I will take the opportunities to do more in redeeming that responsibility.
Surprises? Not many that can match 9/11 here in DC. I was among those watching smoke from the Pentagon across the Potomac -- my office was on the Virginia side. The American Airlines plane had followed my own route home -- along 110 to 395 -- the very same exit -- haunting.
I was really looking forward to the high school class reunion in 2009 & didn't make it after all. I hope to reconnect with many of you in our 50 year reunion. My friend Peggy (Collins) tells me we ought to be "extra cute" by then. It's been far too long ------
