Mary's Story
College
I started out at SUNY College at Oneonta in Fall 1974 where I attended for two years as an Art History and Studio Art major. I transferred to Hobart and William Smith Colleges where I majored in Religious Studies and finished an equivilant major in Art History. I went to Katharine Gibbs Secretarial College in Boston and Northeastern for a short time. Courses in desktop publishing, writing, and Government followed for professional development. Returned to Mary Washington College James Monroe Center for a Masters in Education Fall 2000 which I completed December 2002. I also took several more studio art courses at Mary Wash. and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine.
Workplace
After college I worked as a laboratory assistant at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine with the microbiology and biochemistry departments, an odd change of direction. I also worked as a librarian for the Ronceverte WVA Library and as a cocktail waitress at the Clover Club (just down the street from the Greenbriar Resort Hotel. ton and worked temporary jobs while taking classes at Katharine Gibbs and Northeastern U. By the next year I was working at the US Bureau of Mines first as a secretary then as a legislative analyst finally as a writer/editor. I quit after seven years to become a teacher's aide and mom. Moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia when my son was three and worked for Trinity Episcopal Church for five years. At that point (Sept. 1999) I seperated from my husband, quit my job, and went back to school for an M.Ed. and teacher certification in k-12 Art. I worked as a substitute teacher for 4 years and now am in my 6th year teaching k-6 art and talanted and gifted students at King George Elementary School in King George County, Virginia. My son is now a junior and Chemistry Major at Guilford College in North Carolina. Tutoring and TA-ing Chemistry keeps him busy. Luckily, I have my 2 little dogs to keep me company and cell phone and internet to stay connected. My parents now live in Tennessee and if and when the economy improves I may start looking for a job nearer to them.
