Mary's Story

My exciting and memorable story: Most of you know I married Bud Spittler right out of high school and quickly (a little too quickly) had two wonderful children. Divorced Bud in 1964 (teenage marriages rarely work). Had been working since I was 17, so was able to support myself. Had one other hideous marriage in 1968 and got out of it as soon as possible. Kept working in clerical & medically oriented positions (veterinarians, girl Friday, medical lab, pharmacy) thank God I had taken typing to prepare for college so at least I had that work skill to begin with. And in those days, most employers were happy to train you. I was a pharmacy tech and a veterinary tech and a lab tech before it required college. Went to some college but never completed it. Finally had a successful marriage in 1979 and we were together and happy until my husband, Ron George, passed away from leukemia in 1998. In 1977, went to work for State of California and worked there 30 years as a medical office technician. Retired in December of 2006 and have been enjoying retirment ever since. After working 47 years in a row I was ready to retire. Had a total of five grandchildren but two of them passed away very young, which was incredibly hard on everyone, espec...Expand for more
ially my daughter and stepdaughter, but happy to report I still have three healthy grandchildren, in fact, just came back from Hawaii where my daughter Karen lives now with her husband and three children and her oldest son (my grandson, obviously) got married in June. Huge and incredibly beautiful wedding. My son Donald still lives in Highland where I grew up and I moved to my parents old house in Highland when I retired. It is nice to have him living close. He has never been married.Think maybe he learned something from his parents? Still love animals and have two dogs and two cats plus the two cats I ended up adopting when my son had to move. Only two of the cats are inside cats. I am really not the crazy olde cat lady you hear about, I promise. When I worked for the veterinarians, I would have stayed there forever, but couldn't live on the pay. Have always loved working with animals. All in all, a great and very successful life so far, with joy and sadness and everything in between and still looking forward to better things to come. Look forward also to seeing everyone at our 50 freaking year reunion. Never thought we'd live that long but hey, looks like a lot of us are still around. Go Pacific High School!! Take care.
