Maryann's Story

I married Jim Ellis right out of highschool. We were divorced 3 years later. We had 2 little girls. I remained alone for seven years and then met my current husband through a computer dating service (one of the first ones) We have been married 43 years in July.Ray had 2 little girls of his own and we had 2 sons.We have 10 Grandchildren and 71/2 great grandchildren. The new one is due in August. We are retired and enjoying it. I hope that my classmates remember me. I was terribly shy and didn't say much while we were in school. I go for walks. I write down my problems and all the solutions I can think of and then choose the one that works best. I smoked a cigarette within the restricted area around school. i quit smoking 27 years ago. I have lived in Detroit, Roseville ,Harperwoods, and now live in Davisburg. We moved around constantly when I was married to Jim because he had trouble paying his rent.Ray and I have lived in the same house in Davisburg for 41 years. We moved to Davisburg so our kids could have wide open spaces to roam in. I got my degree in Psychology with the idea of being the great therapist. When that dream didn't pan out I used my degree( for 22 years) in Market Research. It was a fascinating experience and knowing a fact or two about human nature didn't hurt a thing. That is a tough question because I didn't have a favorite teacher in high school. I would have an easier time telling you about those teachers I would never want to see again. I liked most of my teachers. I was a commuter student at Oakland University. The only groups I belonged to were the Golden Key National Honor Society and the Society of College Women. To be truly happy I need to be with my husband doing what ever we want or nothing at all. We talk about everything. We don't travel as much as we wanted because my husband had to have a quadruple heart bypass in 2008 and it left him weak. Because of my shy behavior, I doubt that many of my classmates remember me at all. I have kept in touch with my two best friends,Nancy Tes...Expand for more
chendorf and Wanita Kunze. My current age is 67. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be older than dirt.. I was so completely right but the knowledge I have gained and the hard knocks I got along the way, are things that have made me the person I am today. I wouldn't change a thing. The only thing that I haven't accomplished is to have my novel published. My first crush was on one of my uncle's friends. He was only 12 years older than me. I have no idea where he is today. i actually asked him to wait for me until i grew up.. I consider my style to be contempary and comfortable. I have never been a slave to fashion. I don't care what the latest style happens to be I wear what I like and if anybody doesn't like it don't look at me. I share my home with my husband, which I find idealic..We have a lot in common and talk about everything. Nancy (Teschendorf)Cooper and i have been friends since we were in the 4th grade at Beechwood Elementary. I am not sure why we clicked but we did and 57 years later we are still close. I met Wanita (Kunze) Strong when we got to the high school and we are still close. My first job was at St.Clair Shores Herald, where I got paid .50 per hour to sell subscriptions . What I remember most about it is having a headache from people slamming the phone down in my ear..One thing I can say about my work career is that whenever I changed jobs it was always a step up from the job I had before. My favorite way to relax is to take my fishing pole and go down to the lake and fish or go out to my garden and pull weeds.Something about yanking up weeds root and all helps break the stress. My hero is my mom. She was liberated before there was a word for it.She always lived her life the way she wanted and never allowed anyone to dictate to her. She outlived 3 husbands and was looking for number4 when she died at 90. She survived three bouts with Breast Cancer but died of old age. I am very proud of her and miss her every day. we weren't just mother and daughter we were friends.
