Maryann's Story

I was born in Brooklyn, June 25, 1951, and raised by foster parents in Jamaica Estates. I attended The Immaculate Conception grammar school and because I had no intentions of going to college, I attended Dominican Commercial High, for a commercial diploma. I was raised strict and was always a decade behind my peers. This made school life hard to fit in any social circle, comfortably. I must say, though, I made the best out of every situation and became friends with a lot of my classmates, mainly during class. After graduating High school, I did not want to be stereotyped as a future secretary and didn't have the education for a nurse, nor did I have the height qualifications for stewardess. So I joined the United States Air Force. Because of my foster father being around aircraft all his life, I wanted to be a part of the aviation industry, so I tried out for Stewardess, since height was no factor. Unfortunately, this field closed down while I was in basic training, but a new field opened for women - Air Traffic Control. Out of 26 women who tried out for this, I was one of 5 to make it. The physicals and psych tests were long and tedious. After basic training, went to Keesler AFB, Mississippi for my official training in ATC. Th...Expand for more
at was the start of my 12 year career in the Air Force. By 1972 I managed to go overseas and bring home the boys from Viet Nam, get a couple of regulations changed, allowing women, whether married or unmarried, to stay in the service when they become pregnant. Since marriage did not agree with me ( married and divorced twice), I managed to have 5 beautiful daughters and a career while on active duty. In 1982, when President Reagan fired all those civilian controllers, my enlistment just happened to be up and I was offered a job with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). I was 30 at the time and the age cut off was 31, which occurred 3 months into my formal pass/fail schooling in Oklahoma City. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket. LOL. Needless to say the rest of my career was devoted to my girls and the FAA. I was forced to retire at age 56, FAA requirement, but the 37 years of government service was was very good to me. These last 2 1/2 yrs was spent traveling, visiting my children and grandkids (11 to be exact). Recently, I've put in an application to become an instructor in the very same field I just retired from. Yep, I can honestly say I had my cake and ate it too or I should say I had the best of both worlds.
