Maryl's Story

Life Good grief! I'm nearly 60 years old! Get back, Loretta!! I have been a junior and senior high school teacher for 30 years, now retired. My first job was teaching English and Journalism at Dana Jr. High School in lovely Arcadia, CA. Those kids I had for four years were awesome. I apologize to all of my students from my first year of teaching. I was really paddling in a leaky boat and I appreciate my principal, Don Wells, who gave me many pointers and "Pearls of Wisdom" to get me through a most harrowing year. I was only 21 years old and felt overwhelmed! We then moved to the high desert where we originally lived and I taught first at Hook Jr. High (really wonderful kids) and then Serrano High School (loved all those little 7th graders and freshmen). We moved to the mountain community of Wrightwood for eight years and I continued teaching at Serrano. We moved back to the desert, settled in Apple Valley, and I taught at Hesperia High (neat kids) and then finished up my career at Mojave High School, home of the Coyotes and also home of my really inspiring, creative and great students. I miss being in the classroom and I miss my students. I am married to Steve Sell...Expand for more
man and we have two children: Our son Blaine is a Captain in the U.S. Army and a graduate of the University of Idaho. He is currently serving a second tour of duty (15 months) in Ramadi, Iraq. Our daughter Colby is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego and works for the UC system and she is also taking graduate courses. Steve and I now live in beautiful Idaho where we own and operate an RV resort (Fort Running Bear). My favorite music is classic rock and roll. My favorite season is fall. We live in a remote area where we are pounded by lots of snow each winter, so I am a voracious reader and also make paper to keep myself from going nuts. We still ski and like to travel. My favorite country is Norway. I lived there for three really adventurous years when I was in junior high school and have returned three times since 2002. I can speak enough Norwegian to be understood, but once someone starts talking, it's curtains for me. My father was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and taught the Royal Norwegian Air Force pilots how to fly American jets. I do not have a criminal record. I would love to hear from you, whoever you are.
