Masao's Story

Life HELLO TO ALL MY '57 LEUZINGER CLASSMATES! Wow how time flies, I guess most of us are retired and hopefully enjoying the prime of our lives. I've been toO lazy to update my profile, I wonder what happened to my old one? Probably died from neglect; anyway, if you're curious, here's a summary of my life: After Leuzinger, went to El Camino then to UCLA and graduated with a BS in Engineering. Over a 40 year period, worked for Northrop twice and Hughes twice, the longest was with Hughes during my last 25 years and took early retirement there. I loved my career because it was challenging, took me to many places in the world and I got a wide variety of interesting project assignments. It was a challenging time, but I got to participate with a first class team of engineers in developing and designing communications satellites from the beginning, a chance of a life time. During those years, I married a Chinese girl from Manila, Philippines---Nancy Miwa. We had 3 kids, two boys and a girl. All are grown up now and doing well with their lives. I have 8 grand children. After retiring early from Hughes, my wife passed away from Cancer. We did a lot together and I really miss her very much. How life can change and affect your views. I certainly felt depressed without her and certainly wasn't looking at any kind of future. But strange how fate has a way of changing all that. About 4 years after Nancy passed away, I met and married a retired doctor from mainland China. Her name is Mary Guanghuan Zhang. Like me, she was a widow, her husband passed away 9 years before we met of kidney failure. She has a son and together, they were operating a small company selling airport lighting and obstruction lighting equipment. I found a new career helping this small company expand it's product base with new LED based lights and embedded processor systems. I am having the time of my life now, traveling and visiting new places here in China and spending time designing new products. Mary and I live in Los Angeles half our time and half our time in Shenzhen, China. Life has been good to me even with it's downs. My kids are healthy and successful, I am married to a wonderful woman, I like what I'm doing, what more can one ask. I Hope you, likewise, are enjoying your golden years and hope to cross paths with you in the future.---MAS UPDATE: Mary and I have been going back and forth to China for the last 20 years now. We have a home in Shenzhen, China also. This city is amazing, In about 40 years, it has grown from about 30,000 to an estimated 14 million, the average age is about 30, it is China's Silicon Valley. I don't do much work anymore so Mary and I travel all over China when we get a chance. Every year, we visit her brother and sister in a city called Shangqiu, that once was the capital of China's Shang dynasty. We go to visit Mary's co-workers and friends in a city called Bengbu where Mary practiced as a doctor. Our last trip included Chongqing, where Mary's daughter-in-law's parents live and have started a mountain resort. Couldn't resist it, free food and lodging. My impressions: China continues to grow, there are new roads and houses being built almost everywhere. It makes the US look like we are in the slow lane. Shenzhen is being included as part of a mega city in the Pearl River Delta. Shenzhen's population 40 years ago was about 30,000 thousand, today it is about 14 million the PRD mega-city will be about 90 million people and include Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macau, Zhuhai and all the cities in between. Shanghai and Beijing will also expand into mega cities. China is still growing and by 2028, is expected to match US GDP. It has already passed the US in PPP GDP. You can google 'Shenzhen' to learn more about the city. UPDATE: Sept 24th, 2020.---Normally Mary and I go back and forth between the US and China every year, 7 months in the US and 5 months in China. This year, the coronavirus happened. When it ramped up here in China in February, we were in Chongqing, visiting in-laws at their mountain resort there. We go there ...Expand for more
about every other year to celebrate Chinese New Years with that side of the family. It is non-stop eating and playing mahjong, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This time everything came to a screeching halt and all festivities were cancelled and we were stuck in a mountain resort owned by the in-laws.(Mary's son's wife's parents) We stayed there for about 8 weeks with free food and lodging, one could say an all-paid inclusive vacation. After getting cabin fever, we headed back to Shenzhen. By then the virus was way down in China. We had purchased tickets to head back in May hoping the US would follow a similar pattern to China. Didn't happen. Our flight got cancelled and we are still stuck here in Shenzhen, China until our carrier restarts flights, not that we're anxious to get back with Trump mismanaging the coronavirus fight in the US. While all this is going on, real estate prices in Shenzhen keep rising. Mary's son decides to move the company from Shenzhen to Chongqing. They are building a new factory there and should be back up by years end. Now, Mary and I have no family in Shenzhen, only some long time friends. China is back up to (almost) normal. Shenzhen is busy as ever, the rush hours are like LA and new buildings continue to rise. Around our condo, whole blocks are being razed and the expectations are that two super-skyscrapers and surrounding 60 story condos will rise. While the price of our home in Gardena is about what we paid (still), our condo in Shenzhen has risen about 10 times what we paid. We can't afford what we own today. The expectations are that our condo will continue to rise in price as these skyscrapers come into being so for now, we are staying put. However, if this happens, we are thinking of moving on. We may retire in a small city called Bengbu, where Mary worked as a doctor and has friends there. (we visit from time to time so we know about the place). Mary has a condo there, but it is run down there from neglect. She hopes the city will tear down the building because if they do that, she will get (free) an equivalent condo in the replacement building or elsewhere. The location is in Bengbu's city center overlooking the central park, like our current condo in Shenzhen which overlooks Lychee Park (like the lychee fruits that grow on trees there). We would rent out our condo in Shenzhen. My opinion: Trump has accelerated what appears to be America's decline. While our military gets stronger, and we keep putting our nose into other people's business, China continues to rise. You can see it in the rise of its cities, its infrastructure, and its growth in the technology sectors, especially here in Shenzhen. Seniors in Shenzhen get a 'senior card' that allows free rides on the metro and buses. It also gets you free entry into the theme parks here. Mary's retirement benefits continue to rise and her monthly healthcare allowance also rises. Shenzhen also gives seniors a small monthly stipend to supplement the retirement benefits. The fear I have is that with US debt rising, more seniors retiring, and the workforce getting smaller, social security and Medicare will take a hit in the future. Did you know that 90% of Chinese own a house? 80% of them have no mortgage. When Deng Xiao Ping took over, he started China on a capitalist path and dismantled a lot of the government companies and privatized them or shut them down. In that process, the company provided housing was given (or sold cheap) to employees. Mary's house in Bengbu is one of those 'free houses.' The problem of mortgage debt is a lot less than the US because of this transferred wealth that allowed families to begin and continue their wealth creation by trading up. Since 'Classmates' doesn't allow URL links, Google Forbes re '90% Chinese own houses' BTW, if you are interested in my thoughts about China, look me up on Quora. I have participated quite a bit but recently my VPN services have been cut off ( I have 3 VPN's and all three are down). I will most likely re-participate when I get back to the states. That's it for today.....Mas
