Matt's Story

Life I was born in Illlinois to Pastor Dan and Linda Jones. We moved a total of twenty-two times while I was in school. My upbringing was Pentecostal, even though I myself am an athiest. At least I hope there's not a hell, or I'm fairly sure I'll end up there. I consider the Dever Metro my hometown(s) because that's where I spent most of the years that were important to me later. It was there that I learned what it really was to be human: fallable. It was in Denver that I learned the most about who I was. After I left, I drifted for a while. I suppose that's the best word for it. I really wouldn't call it traveling, although I would consider it a sojourn. I met my wife along the way, and we were married in early 1998. We had our son in 2000. My wife was very ill. Her heart literally expanded, and my son was born a month early by emergency C. She was drowning in her own fluids. She lost twelve pounds of water in the one night before they operated. Quick aside: why do all the pivotal moments in my life have to revolve around hospitals? Doesn't seem quite fair. My son was thin, strong, and colicky. He crawled and walked early but talked late. He has Aspergers: a mild form of Autism. He's a special boy and we love him dearly, even if he can be a little trying at times. I was going to college at the time, but dropped out to take care of my son and work as much as I could while my wife recuperated. It was a good thing. Education loans saved our financial life, and I would have ended up with a completely useless English degree anyway, althought I might have gone for Psychology just because I'm glutton for punishment. To be quite honest, we weren't ready to have children, and it cost us a great deal. Not in money; money can always be made. It cost in intimacy, trust, and confidence. I switched careers and bec...Expand for more
ame a Production Coordinator for a web-firm in Evergreen. Then switched back when it became obvious I could make more money in the trades with less overtime and less hassle. We ended up in North Carolina for a stint, and had to say good-bye to my wife's parents. They weren't... they weren't good. Not all mothers are angels and not all grandparents are sweet. We came back to Oklahoma because I had family here and we set about establishing ourselves. I own a small painting and decorative cabinet finishes company that I've had some success at. I usually do lunch once a week with my sales reps, and work most weekends. We're steadily growing into better and more expensive work. My wife takes my son to therapy twice a week, and he's doing well in kindergarten, even though he is a year or two behind. Things are interesting, if still a bit dramatic. My folks are both mentally problematic, and unable to work. We help them out when we can. I had my father working for me doing what he could do, but his back finally got too bad: two bad disks, nerve damage. He's writing a novel now. In my spare time I painted portraits for a while, built a few guitars that I gave away, and picked up the alto sax again. I even wrote about half of a decent romance novel over this last winter when work was slow. I ran out of spare time and never finished it. I've been thinking lately about moving back to Denver. I know you can never go back, but it would be nice to feel like there's some continuity to my life; other than entropy I mean. I miss my friends from high school, and wish I'd kept in touch, although it may be best that I hadn't. There were times when things were very tough. I'd have been hard pressed to be a reasonable facsimile of a person. Although anyone who knew me would probably agree that I was always fairly hard pressed to be human.
