Matt's Story

Life From BayBio: Matthew M. Gardner is President of BayBio, the voice of the life science industry in Northern California, headquartered in South San Francisco. In total, BayBio serves the community of 800+ life science companies in Northern California, their 85,000 employees, and the supporting communities of suppliers, service firms and other stakeholders. Mr. Gardner oversees BayBio's activities in advocacy, industry advancement, membership benefits and communications. On behalf of industry, Mr. Gardner represents BayBio in industry bodies and roundtables including the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the Council of State Bioscience Associations, the Global Bioscience Partnership, and other coalitions and business development groups. He has contributed content to a broad range of publications, from biotechnology articles in Manufacturing Today and Helix International magazines to white papers on enterprise development and innovation policy. Mr. Gardner previously held the position of Director of the Maryland Bioscience Alliance, in Rockville, Maryland. There, he was responsible for serving the Mid-Atlantic bioscience community. Mr. Gardner founded new programs for the Alliance's membership, including its Clinical Development Initiative and Venture Capital Task Force. orth American Director of Business Development for the government of Queensland, Australia, including responsibility for biotechnology initiatives. While serving Queensland, he founded and chaired of the Queensland-United States Bioscience Business Council. Mr. Gardner is a current member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the World Affairs Council of Northern California, the Economic History Association, the Economic History Society of the UK, the American Society of Association Executives, and the International Schumpeter Society. Mr. Gardner is active in the community through directorships and advisory roles for organizations including the Alameda County Workforce Investment Board, the Corporate Relations Advisory Group of JHPIEGO at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program, and the Friends of Griffith University Foundation. In prior advisory roles, Mr. Gardner served the Maryland Technology Development Center, the Career Transition Center of Montgomery County, Maryland, and the Australia America Association of Washington, DC. He was a member of the founding Global Board of Advisors for the Patent and License Exchange and was a charter member of the LA Morning Rotary Club serving downtown Los Angeles, California. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and his Master of Arts in History, both from the University of San Diego.
