Matthew's Story
Recently, my teaching career has involved more and more administrative responsibilities.
First, I served five years as chair of the Theology Department. During these years, I continued to teach two courses during the fall, spring and summer terms at University of Portland. I especially enjoy teaching a marriage course with a very good friend from the sociology department. Bob and I have taught this course at least twice each year, including three times in Salzburg, Austria, since summer of 2001.
Then I served as the Associate Dean of students in our College of Arts and Sciences, while teaching three courses per year. My main duty was to work with students who were struggling academically or who were dealing with difficult situations, like a death in the family. It is exciting to watch students mature and grow academically.
For the past five years, my main responsibilities were tied to my new role as Associate Provost. My friends like to tease me that I have gone over to the "dark side." All I know is that I have been busy working with students from all of o...Expand for more
ur schools snd college, helping revise the university core, orienting new faculty, etc... Best of all, I continue to teach two courses each year ( yes, the marriage course each time). It will be sad next fall, when Bob and I will offer this class for the last time. Bob is retiring. Can I still teach by myself? Time will tell. We have 83 students in that class now and the same number registered for the course next fall. Update: With Bob now officially retired, I have begun to teach three other upper division courses., one per semester. I love teaching, but finding time to grade is the main issue.
I retired at the end of June 2017. I am looking forward to new adventures and challenges. By the way, retirement keeps you busy! I do plan to teach one course beginning in the Spring of 2018. I still love interacting with college age students.
I hope that those reading this update are healthy and are enjoying their own unique adventures and journeys.
I hope to see many of you at our reunion next year. Does anyone know when that will happen?
Best wishes to all,
Matt
