Matthew's Story

Life After spending a few semisters at MCC I decided to focus on a career instead of school (face it, school was never my strong point). Starting off building PCs for a local shop eventually found myself working on UNIX systems and relocated to Denver, CO in 1997. Over the years I've worked primarly as a Systems Administrator for several Fortune 500 companies. I now work for IBM installing servers for the eBusiness division in Boulder, CO. Since moving to Boulder I'm finding my footing after a few long-term relationships that didn't quite work-out. I still study music (lately I've been studying harmonic and melodic concepts of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane). After a long hiatus, I recently started playing with other musicians. As a guitarist I still find the "s...Expand for more
cene" pretty competetive even at my age (I'm not a competetive person). Even still I've meeting wonder folks, learning amazing new things and having a great time! Workplace UNIX/Linux systems administration has been my livlihood over the last decade. Over the last few years the job market has been in such turmoil and economic conditions have been so bad in IT that I'm now on my 4th (!!) job in under 2 years. And I'm one of the lucky ones. The average stint for an unemployed IT worker is something like 7 months. Each of my layoffs have only resulted in each case of 4 weeks downtime. Although I love the work that I do and generally find it very rewarding the economic reality is I may have to find work in another field as all of my peers will soon be located overseas.
