Matthew's Story
After graduation, I was off to UC San Diego to study Political Science and continue with German. I found a great porgram there that had in international focus. That really got me interested in studying, living, and traveling abroad. I spent my junior year in Goettingen, Germany and loved it. There were hard times and things that took a lot of adjusting to, but that was part of what made it great.
I came back, finished my undergrad work at UC San Diego, and returned to Upland to work for a while. My folks had left for NorCal and my brother and I rented the house from them for a while. I worked as a substitute teacher at UHS for a while, then moved on to a job in the financial world. I didn't care much for that.
In 1995, I went to Monterey, CA to attend graduate school. I studied International Policy Studies, Economics, and more German. I finished in 1997 and moved to Washington, DC to work in arms control as a contractor to the US Army.

nd I moved back to CA. I've been in Orange County since 1999. I enjoy the weather, proximity to the ocean, and, did I mention the weather? The fake people wear a little thin, but like anything, I take the good with the not so good.
I've been working in software engineering groups for 8 years writing technical documentation, coordinating translation and localization work, hacking HTML, learning, and solving problems. I also write creative content for Web pages and print ads as a freelancer. I like that a lot better than my day job.
In my free time, I've been sailing quite a bit. I passed a basic course last year and skippered for the first time in October, 2007. Since then, I've been at the helm a lot more, learned the ropes as a crew member, and taken a bunch of classes. I'm set to do my first Catalina crossing in August with 3 UHS alums from the class of 1987 (including my older brother, who is local).
Looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and classmates. I simply cannot believe it'll be 20 years!
