Maureen's Story

During high school, worked in advertising doing typesetting and layout --even did some Ralph Lauren work. (Bet none of my friends knew I had this job!) After high school became an R.N. and worked at Strong in the Surgical Intensive Care/Trauma Unit for a few million years. Had a brief stint doing 'fascinating' research involving 3-methylhistidine and protein loss in muscle tissue (snooze). Decided I wanted to be a doctor and studied at U of R. Now how much fun would working as a doctor be? Finished a degree in Asian/Russian History. Met my husband in a gay-punk bar. At nearly 30, I married at the Strassenburg planetarium during an awesome star show. (Never did get that Catholic vibe going at Mooney.) Thanks to Brother Eric and his meditation sessions in the chapel, I became a Buddhist. Moved to Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Went to graduate school at Case Western Reserve University. (This education thing is big...I did graduate #301 out of 310 at Mooney!) Sister Marlene always said I was the stupidest person alive -- yeah, and I graduated with a history degree, so there :-) While continuing the nursing thing, I became a chef in an Indian restaurant. Totally awesome job. I can make a mean samosa! I've been a vegetarian since 1978. At nearly 40, I had a baby--Sassy Cassie. Started working for a film society. Moved to Boys Town in Chicago. Most awesome year of my life. Had second girl -- Libby the Bibby. For the next decade, cont...Expand for more
inued to work for the film society. Got to travel to Europe and watch hundreds of foreign films a year -- mostly from my 12 inch TV at home :-) I had a couple hundred volunteers work for me. Truly the best job in the world. Moved to Westchester, New York. Not even gonna go there! Moved to Park Avenue in Manhattan. Definitely digging the city life. (They say you always end up where you started...I'm originally from the Bronx. Not sure what demon possessed my parents to move out to an apple orchard.) I have an awesome husband --Dave Armon and my life with him is always fascinating. His job takes him around the world and we get to tag-along. I try to instill good values in my girls and perform community service. I had a girl scout troop for a few years. During one camping trip, when it poured rain, I packed them up and went and set up tents on 32nd floor of an office overlooking Times Square. We 'did sushi'. Immediately after hurricane Katrina, I spent a week down in Mississippi giving medical care. My feelings of outrage knew no bounds. (Louisiana was like a war zone and I knew as soon as I got there that it wouldn't be fair to my family to put myself at such risk.) It was an exhausting experience but one of the most personally satisfying. (9/11 was just emotionally exhausting. My brother went down with me on the medical bus. After his experience he left the fashion design world and became an EMT--thats radical!) Blah, blah, blah!
