Maureen's Story

Life It's just amazing how time flies by. Seems like just "yesterday" I was skipping "A period" and having breakfast at LaForge on the "avenue" or "G period" for a drive around the ocean drive. Or just hanging around on the "wall" up on the "avenue." The other day my daughter needed to go to a "couture" party (no idea what this is but something to do with a "gossip girl" theme) and I dug out my old mini dress that I would wear to all those De La Salle dances (yes, I still kept it after all these years) and asked her to try it on. I nearly wept to see that it fit her and that she was excited to wear it to her "do" as I was to wear it to all those high school dances!! Like time flying by but also standing still at one moment. But with the changing times, I have found that experiencing life is a bit more exciting than that. 3 children have made me stay somewhat current with the times and especially with the music and dancing. And they keep me up to date on how to cruise the internet and all that it can do for you. They are now just past the age that I was when I was hanging out up on the "avenue." And I have to say - way more savvy ...Expand for more
than I was at that age... Both boys attending a state university with the last one (girl) to set foot next fall. Yet another change for me come August --- an empty nester. When I am not having fun with them I am usually on the tennis courts. I've been playing competitive tennis for the past 10 years, but the bout with breast cancer last year set me back. I am happy to say I am back with even more intensity than before. Life challenges and experiences do that to you. A new lease on life if you will. When I am not playing tennis, I am working as a nurse at a local hospital in their same day surgical unit. I keep busy with bookclub and the Red Hat Society as well... my own source of fun. I have spent most of my life married to my husband of 29 years! My husband, still working, hopes to retire soon and we plan to move closer to the ocean. I miss the ocean and the sound of the seagulls and fog horns that were the sounds and sites of Newport. I miss the cliff walk and the beach and the drives around the famous ocean drive. There is no place around here to find an "Awful Awful" and there is no place like home and no place like Newport.
